With Yvaine unable to bear more children, there was little need for Joseph Wilhelm to visit her bedchamber regularly, though on occasion he did spend the night with her, for his wife was still youthful and attractive in appearance. The king mostly busied himself with matters of state -- negotiating marriages for his children, touring the kingdom's numerous military training camps and outposts, and keeping a wary eye on any sign of a resurgence of the resistance. Of course, Joseph Wilhelm also busied himself with the women of the court, but this was nothing new for the king; the last time he had his advisors check, he had no fewer than twelve illegitimate children -- all of whom he gifted with lands and titles. Meanwhile, with little more to do than be a pretty figurehead, Queen Yvaine took it upon herself to oversee the princesses' educations -- both for her own daughters Victoire and Johanna, as well as her stepdaughter, Cecilia. She saw to it that the girls were properly trained in needlework and music, in painting and foreign languages, in dancing and court etiquette.
Cecilia did not mind spending time with Yvaine; in fact, she quite enjoyed it. She had no memories of her real mother, the king's first wife who had died giving birth to her, so she regarded Yvaine as such. This was the cause of considerable tension between young Cecilia and her brothers and sisters -- for Genevieve, Augustine, Emmanuelle, and Magnus were all old enough to remember the late queen and saw Yvaine's presence as an insult, and Dorian and Stellan now knew (though Cecilia still did not) that Joseph Wilhelm was not their father.
These tensions were momentarily pushed aside when word arrived from Albas that Genevieve had given birth to her first child, a daughter named Mairwen. Genevieve and Leo had married five years previously, and their marriage was one of diplomacy and strategy. But in the months that followed, the couple fell madly in love with each other. Leo, a notorious womanizer, even swore to remain faithful to his wife, though he did continue to support the little girl he'd fathered with a maid. Genevieve and Leo became the talk of the town, in both Kyrn and Albas, and the arrival of Princess Mairwen made them even more popular with the people.
Genevieve was not the only one of Joseph Wilhelm's children to unexpectedly fall in love. Just over a year ago, the ever-adventurous Augustine embarked on a grand tour of the lands outside of Kyrn, for she knew her father would soon find a husband for her and she wanted to see the world before she had to marry. In the heavily forested hinterlands, part of the kingdom of Rossinest, she and her contingent were the honored guests of King James III, whose eldest son, Charles, was nearly the same age as Augustine. What's more, the young prince was handsome, fit, and charismatic, and he seemed to take a liking to Augustine as well. Needless to say, Augustine never was able to finish her grand tour, for she did not want to leave Charles. But perhaps James should have insisted that the princess depart, because as her stay in Rossinest grew longer, Augustine soon became pregnant with Charles's child. The royal court at Rossinest was utterly scandalized, and James (rightly) feared the response of Augustine's powerful father. He could not send the princess back to Kyrn in her present state, yet he also could not arrange a match with Joseph Wilhelm's approval. Caught between a rock and a hard place, he sent a messenger to Kyrn begging forgiveness of Joseph Wilhelm and pleading for him to allow Augustine and Charles to wed.
Joseph Wilhelm was outraged. He had come close to betrothing Augustine to a fine Kyrnian nobleman of great wealth, but now she was forcing his hand. An alliance with tiny, backwards Rossinest and the insignificant Haplings -- what good would that do? But the king knew that he had no other choice but to consent to the marriage, and so he gave his blessing to his daughter and future son-in-law in Rossinest. The wedding took place on a cold winter day, and the baby, Princess Charlotte, was born five months later.
Seeing what her sister had done and the embarrassment she had brought to the Tyrian line, Emmanuelle devoted herself entirely to her duties as a Kyrnian princess. She did not protest when her father announced that she would marry the much-older Henry Gillen, Duke of Tremontana. The Gillens were the center of a veritable mining empire in southern Kyrn. With the considerable profits from the mines, plus access to the best stones and raw materials, the marriage was very beneficial indeed. While Emmanuelle certainly did not love her husband, she found him to be a friendly man, and she did not mind being married to him.
But despite the marriages and the babies, all was not well in the royal family of Kyrn. Ever since Magnus had learned the truth about his lineage -- that his mother's lover, Breccan Pike, was the true father of himself and the triplets -- the prince had become increasingly disenchanted with how the kingdom was run. So after graduating from the military academy with the highest laurels, he swore allegiance to the resistance movement, which had gone underground for the time being. Dorian and Stellan had followed suit, though they were still cadets at the academy. For all intents and purposes, however, the young men continued to play their roles as dutiful princes of Kyrn, for they could not risk drawing attention to themselves and their new cause. After all, with no legitimate ties to the king, Magnus, Dorian, and Stellan would all face execution if caught.
