[Opinions] Marny
What do you think of Marny for a girl? I never liked Marnie because it made me think of the movie which scares me. But today I saw it spelled Marny and it makes a huge difference. I think it's really cute. Opinions? Too cutesy as a full name.

Hmm, never thought of it spelled that way. I kind of like it because it looks unexpected. I originally loved Marnie because of a book I read by that name (also main character's name) when I was in maybe 9th grade, although I have never since been able to find that book again... it seems to not exist! I've seen the movie, too, but that doesn't affect my perception of the name negatively.I don't think it's cutesy, I think it's sort of strong. It's along the same lines as names like Maura, Moira, Mona, stuff like that.

I think Marnie looks better, although it makes me think of marmite! Marny looks funny, - Marney might be better? Just like I think Barny looks odd but Barney is OK. (Marny and Barny make me think "barmy"!)

I like Marnie/Marny as a nickname--maybe for Margaret, Marjorie, or Marina?--but it doesn't do much for me on its own. It really is cute as a nickname, though.I prefer Marnie, but I have good memories associated with the movie; whenever it thundered, my mother, brother, and I would start asking each other (in bad Scottish accents, of course) "Are you afraid of shtorms, Marnie?" and then we'd crack up like mad. It's silly, but it gives me a warm feeling.

What about Marni without the "e?" It has history and meaning, or is is still too similar to Marnie?

I prefer Marni or Marnee, but it's ok and way underused.
