[Opinions] Tennyson
Tell me all about Tennyson! Do you love it or hate it? Would you use it on a boy, girl, or both? Any combo's? Bad associations? Cute nick names?I wanna know everything you possible can think of Tennyson. This is the first name my two wiley boys have suggested that I like. The best part for me is its not even ranked in the top 1000.

Definitely on a boy. I love it. Great poet association & adorable Tenny nn.

I like the association with the poet, but I'm not too keen on the sound of the name. It's hard not to think of "tennis shoe" and "venison." It's all boy to me. I don't like it on a girl at all.Tenny would be cute as a nickname.Combos:
Tennyson James
Tennyson David
Tennyson Joel
Tennyson Joseph
Tennyson Reid
Tennyson Isaac
Tennyson Kai
Tennyson Patrick
Tennyson Cole
Tennyson Jude
Tennyson Paul
Tennyson Andrew
Tennyson Miles
Tennyson MicahShort classic names seem to sound the best with Tennyson. I included some others as well, though.

I currently like the combo Tennyson Blake - I am not a fan of classic names and while I do like them my DH would never allow a classic

I really like the feel it gives me, largely due to the poet association. I'd love it as a middle name for a boy. Or even a first name with a nn like Tenn or Tenny. Tenny would be a cute nn for a girl too, but I'd absolutely despise Tennyson on a girl...

I think the obvious connection it Lord Alfred Tennyson, it seems a little eye-roll pretentious to me unless it's a family name. Im not trying to be rude, just an honest opinion if I were to hear it but I know some very "bougie" named people that I dont really think about in real life.

I don't know what a "bougie" is.

Like "bourgeois"

Tennyson was a stodgy old Victorian. Why keep that going? How about Auden? :)

I have no problem with old or victorian as for stodgy eh I guess I can be that too!

It really seems kind of weird and more like GP territory to me. I know it is a boy name but I know from other boards that is already being put on girls like Addison and Madison. It sounds too much like Tennessee to me and it also reminds me of tennis shoes. I can't really think of good nickname. Sonny maybe is a possibility but Tenny still sounds like shoes and Ten is a number.

number's dont bother me. Killian wants to name the baby "three" and well thats not going to happen.

If numbers don't bother you, how's about Tertius?

ious / ius / "S" ending names do bother me thoughIts a funny adversion I know but I dont like Lucius, or Theodosius etc

Oh yeah, I forgot your son's name is Killian. I think Killian and Tennyson would make great brothers!

Thanks I think they make a swell sibset myself!

I love it! It's a recent love though and it's definitely a GP. I would personally never use it but I would love to meet a little Tennyson.
Tennyson is strictly male to me and I don't think I would use any nickname but Tenny is okey.

GP's of other tend to be my real pleasure! Killian was a GP name and not many liked it when I choose his name. I still love it, the perfect fit for him. I totally use GP names!

I'm pretty neutral. I don't particularly like surnames as first names, but it's kind of charming. On a boy though. Dear god, only on a boy.

my opinion too, my DH was trying to swing it both ways

Unless it's a family name, my honest opinion is that you're trying a little hard to find something "unique". Having an extremely uncommon name isn't always a good thing. If I had to choose though, I'd definitely use it on a boy because the -son ending is so obvious.

I rather like unique names and there really isn't anything wrong with having one. (unless its creative or made up I usually dislike those). Killian was rather GP and unique when I choose it and have had no problem so excuse me if I try to find a name that fits my unique taste!

Hm...Well, I think the trends would suggest that people would start using this for a girl (think Addison, Emerson) but I personally like most last-names-as-first-names on boys. Tennyson doesn't have bad connotations, but very literary ones (obviously) so if you think he would be a jock, it could be considered a bit weird. Of course, if he were artsy it could be a bit much on him as well. Nicknames...are tough. I guess that's good if you don't want to use a nickname!
Tenny doesn't sound great, and reminds me of Penny, which is feminine. Tenn/Ten would be okay I suppose, but it's...a number. It would help to know your other boys' names to see if it melds well with theirs. Same with your last name.On the whole, I would pick something else unless you absolutely love it. Others to try on: Sidney, Keats (if you like the poets!), Henry/Henric, Edison, Ephraim, Evren, Terrance/Terence, Tiernan

My son's name is Killian and well I would rather not post my last name online.I don't place any connotations on names, or rather my child they can be whatever their little hearts desire-- they make who they are not their name. (while I am sure some will argue there is a slight influence)I really don't like any of your suggestions they are all rather common and plain in my opinion except Evren but I loved Evren last year and have moved on lol it's sort ofa GP name for me now.

A rugby player here in New Zealand has a son named Tennyson and ever since I heard it in a news item about his family I really liked it. I don't think I would ever use it myself but I would love for someone else to use it.Ten or Tenny are cute nicknames but are very 'pet' names if that makes sense, not nicknames that you would ever use to introduce yourself. I think Tennyson on its own is lovely.Combo ideas:
Tennyson George
Tennyson Joel
Tennyson Jude
Tennyson GrayFor some reason I think it suits middle names starting with a G or a J :)

I dont have a problem with using the full name we tend to not use nick names.

I like Tennyson a lot! (In fact, thanks for reminding me, I kind of forgot about it for a while.) I'd only ever consider using it on a boy. And I'd consider Ten or Tenny as nicknames, although one could also do Sonny. Not-ranked-in-the-top-1000-ness is also a big bonus for me. :)

On a boyI like it, but I'm a poet, so it has a bit of charm for me.

I don't like it. It just looks weird and to my ears sounds weird as a first name. I find Tenny fairly silly as well. Also off the top of my head it's the name of Russell Crowe's young son, so the possibility of celebrity influence irks me a little bit there, but no one else has mentioned it so that might just be me and my collection of obscure facts. Can't really elaborate on why I can't warm up to Tennyson, but it's not for me.

I like Tennyson best as a middle name. It can still work as a first name. I think it's a boy's only name. Not a unisex name to me. I think Tennyson would work with short classic names, but only if you're using Tennyson first. Maybe German names, too. I like Tennyson and I'm glad it's not overly popular. I have yet to actually meet a Tennyson.
