Ever since Anna was a teenager she had hoped to one day be able to adopt. When she told Caleb the idea before they married, he agreed that it would be something they should do at some point. Eleven ten years after they were married, they finally had the opportunity to adopt. After going through the long process of decided where to adopt from and choosing the right child, they finally brought home Nicolette Paige from Russia. Nicky's mother died in childbirth and her father raised her until he also died of a fatal case of pneumonia when Nicky was only 11 months old. She stayed with her grandmother until it was determined that the elderly lady was unable to care for the small child and she was taken into foster care until a permanent home could be found for her. The Lerner family was delighted when Nicky's adoption finally went through. Despite having a rough first year of life, she is adjusting very well to her new family and is a very happy child.
Shortly after they came back from Russia with Nicky, Anna found out she was expecting again. Anna and Caleb hadn't really been planning to have any more children, especially not right after the adoption as they wanted to give Nicky more time to adjust before any other major family changes occurred, but they were excited about welcoming a new child nonetheless. They were not prepared for the news they were having another set of twins however. Twins ran in Anna's family as far back as she could remember so it wasn't that she was surprised, they just weren't ready for two newborns in the house along with a one year old that was just getting used to having a family. The twins, Jeremy Gideon and Nathaniel Caius, came without delay though, being born at 31 weeks. The identical twins look strikingly similar to their father and are very well behaved for the most part, which is very helpful for their parents. The older kids, especially Nicky who is enamored with the new babies, all enjoy having Remy and Nate home and like to help out.
