What does BCBE mean? And what is the reason for the second list? I am not sure I quite understood. Thanks.
bcbg = "bon chic bon genre" it literally means "good style good class". The second list is just another popular name list they release in France, I think it shows some contrast.
in other words "bcbg" is sort of considered bourgeois or snobby.
Oh! Thanks for clarifying. I think my taste is more BCBG :)
Mine too :)
Top 20 names for 2012? Are they predicting them? If so then I doubt Emma will be number one. It should be tired now, even in France. I partly grew up there and met lots of little girls named Emma. I hope the Emma trend will be over soon. I can see Jade getting common. I know twins from french Switzerland named Jade and Diane. Zoé, Chloé, Léa, Manon, Louise and Clara have been common for years. They all bore me, except for Clara, Louise and Zoé which I don't find as tired as the others. Léna also bores me to death but that's because Lena is very common in Germany where I also lived.
I like Léo, Théo for the boys. Timéo is kind of cool.
Victoire is awesome. It is a bit dated but I hope it can come back. I know a teenager named this. Valentine isn't uncommon. I know quite a few. Too soon for a comeback. Same with Agathe it used to be super common a while back.

I guess it's prediction but it's based on statistics, habits, etc, so Emma is at the least still going to be very popular. I think Valentine will make a comeback now, my cousin has been considering it, and ever since Salma Hayek used Valentina for her daughter I think it's risen in popularity.
I wasnt surprised by most of the names, the two biggest trends I see right now when I look on French boards or talk to family are American names and old traditional/bougie/aristocratic style names. I thought it was very interesting though!

A lot of English names, especially in the girls' list.Or, names that can work in several languages,I suppose.
I live in French-speaking Canada, and currently it seems to be popular to use English names. For boys, as well.
Very interesting, Thanks for posting!

Louise, Isaure, Victoire, Victoria, Alice, Héloïse, Alix, Margaux, Eléonore

I was surprised at the number of names that I had previously considered "not French enough to be popular in France", like Emma, Jade, Lola, Sarah Ethan, Noah, Tom, Adam, and Enzo... I was also surprised to see Clara not Claire, Victoria as well as Victorie, etc.
I also remember my French teacher saying that Océane was popular; but that was about 5 years ago so...

Jade is also the French word for the stone. Emma, Lola, Sarah etc are international names. They're not English either they have a different origin. Lola seems especially common I've met many girls named this, but just one Jade.
I always call Océane the French Madison. It was so trendy. But it's more nature-y than Madison.

Océane is currently #23, but it was more popular a few years ago: http://www.behindthename.com/top/name/oceane/fr?viewing=graph
Just google prenoms "L'Officiel des prénoms 2012" or something similar and it will come up, or look at aufeminin.com. I think behindthename has a list too.
