[Opinions] Shirley
Do you think it's ready for a comeback? It reminds me of other former surnames such as Ainsley and Casey. What do you think of Shirley? Do you know any?

I don't like the name Shirley at all. I don't think it is ready for a comeback, at least not in my taste-world.

Shirley is my mom's name. I have never cared for it and neither does she. She was named after her aunt who just passed away this September. Given that girls names seem to go through trends every 100 years, I don't see Shirley making a comeback until maybe 2035.

I recently met a 2 year old Shirley! I think it's a cute name that has the ability to age well, which I find difficult for cute names to do.

It's heavily associated with the lovely Swedish singer Shirley Clamp for me (born in 1973, her father is English and wanted to give her a name that couldn't be "swedified"). It's not normally used here and she is the only one I know of, so I don't see it as dated but as a very nice name that I'd love to see more. :)

Don't think it's ready for a comeback yet. I still get a very dated feel with it and the sound doesn't appeal to me either.I don't know any Shirleys.

I love Shirley and I think it's definitely ready for a comeback. It doesn't remind me of Ainsley and Casey at all. Shirley has a lot more substance to me.

Oh GrandmaMy ol' granny is named Shirley. Shirl for short. I like Shirley in theory a lot, I think it is for sure ready for a comeback. Not so sure about it belonging in the surname trend - more the "old person trendy name" trend, along with Marilyn and Ralph.

The only one I know is a boy.

Yes, I have a great uncle named Shirley who died when he was a toddler. Everyone in the family always says "it's a good thing he didn't live with a name like that."

really! Is he old? I kinda like Shirley on a boy for a middle name but I'm not sure if that constitutes child abuse.

He's actually around my age (14-16). I only met him once. Nobody said anything about his name but I know everybody was thinking about it.

Shirley is OK. Growing up, my mom and grandmother always made my brothers and I watch Shirley Temple movies. We did NOT enjoy it. I'm kind of turned off cause of that... but it's still a pretty cute name. One of Anne of Green Gables's children is named Shirley--a boy, not a girl. :)

I don't really like it that much. Something about it just looks very weird to me. The only one I know is in like her 60s, so it seems very dated to me.

I personally think that it is just lovely, I would use it for a girl or a boy even though I usually do not like unisex names.

I like Shirley. I think it's cute, and it reminds me of a character off Code Geass, which is one of my favorite anime.

Shirley you jest (sorry, couldn't resist)! Nah, it's just not a name that I have ever found attractive and it is quite dated to me since most of the ones I've ever known were old enough to be my grandparents (including one man). Having said that, now that the Shirleys are aging (and passing on), I suppose it could be revived.

My middle name is Shirley and I intensley dislike it. I think its a little too dated for a comeback

I don't like Shirley at all. I find it dated and I have a lot of bad associations with it unfortunately.I know one Shirley in real life. She's about 50 and is pretty rough - she comes in the shop where I work to buy scratchcards and cigarettes all the time. Her sister is called Queenie. Also there is a not-so-nice area in the town where I live called Shirley. And Shirley is a character in Eastenders who isn't really the best association either.Sorry

I know a very pretty Shirley, vey nice, very good at her job; she's probably in her late 30s, early 40s, though I'm hopeless at estimating age.As a fn, I far prefer it to Ainsley and Casey (which don't happen as fns where I live, touch wood) and I don't see why it shouldn't make a comeback. I don't imagine anyone watches old Shirley Temple movies any more - that would be enough to put any thinking person off Life Itself - and there aren't any other obstacles in its path. Retro is good! Go for it.

Shirley was my stepmother's name, so I can't like it. She was a horrible woman.
