I have a cousin named Mara. Mara Anne, I think. She's pretty, blonde, smart, really comfortable with people. She's only in the 5th grade or thereabouts, but she's given me a good impression of the name. It's hard for me to hear Mara and not think of her. I'm a bit envious of her first name, actually. If she hadn't been named Mara it may have been on my list when I was choosing what to change my name to.

I pretty much agree with your assessment of the name. I think Mara Catharina is a gorgeous combo and fully approve.
