[Opinions] Re: Chance
in reply to a message by Lily
I think Chance (and Chase) are all right as nicknames for Charles, and maybe even Christian, Christopher, and Clarence, but I really dislike them as names. Chance and Chase are wa-a-a-a-y too similar for brothers, and I'd pick Chase over Chance, if I had to choose. I wouldn't call Chance especially common or uncommon. I know two, both under 7 years old. I know one has a brother named Cash and a sister named Carsyn. When I was in high school, one of my classmates was pregnant and referred to the unborn baby as Chance because she took a chance with birth control and it didn't pay off, but she put the baby (a girl) up for adoption, and I'm sure her parents picked a different name. I've said before that I don't think Chance is particularly positive as far as word names go, and I still feel that way. Yes, it can mean "opportunity," and that's nice, but it's only one of chance's multiple well-known and well-used meanings. It also means accident, bad luck as well as good, risk, and "leaving things up to chance" or "chancing it" can be seen as a reckless and thoughtless act. I like my word names to have positive, or at least neutral, meanings. Chance is like Tempest and Chastity in my mind...it doesn't work for me.
