We would like to thank you most sincerely for bringing Mila and Luc into our lives. They have made our family more complete than we ever could have dreamed and are settling in wonderfully after a year with us.
Six weeks after they arrived with us Mila (Polly was never able to say 'Camille' properly and so the whole family quikly adopted this new nickname) delivered a healthy little boy. Mila and Lucas decided to honour their French heritage by naming their son Louis-Pierre Francois. Little Louis is now almost a year old and is growing up far too quickly for all of our liking! He babbles away happily with Polly in their own bizarre little language, can say Mama, Nana Mill (myself) and Nana Ola (his great-grandmother). So far no progress on Dada or Papa! He learned to walk at just over nine months and we have spent the last few weeks running around the house making sure Louis isn't torturing one of the poor 'woof-woofs'.
Mila has taken to motherhood like a duck to water. I can't remember being half as mature and poised as she when I first brought Phoebe back from the hospital seven years ago. She decided to breastfeed Louis-Pierre for as long as possible and as we are home schooling her she is able to spend lots of the day caring for her son (although in the early days we often helped with night feeds to allow the kids some much deserved sleep!) Despite being kept busy with the baby Mila excels at her schooling. Sometimes we have to nag her to concentrate but once she gets going her passion, drive and enthusiasm for learnigng takes ove. Her passion is so compelling that she has been accepted as a trainee councillor at a local centre for young and single parents. She also recently accompanied me as an intern on a trip to Cambodia to learn about the situation of young women forced to give birth to babies in unsanitary conditions. In her down-time Mila is cheerful, friendly and enjoys staging plays for the family with her new little sisters. She has also started speaking in French with them and with Louis and has been helping myself and Lev improve our skills as well!
Lucas was a little bit of a tougher nut to crack than Mila. Boys mature at a much slower rate than girls and I think he found the challenge of fatherhood and being a member of a large, extended modern family in a foreign country was initially very daunting for him. The one area in which he never faltered was his love for Mila and Louis-Pierre and over time he settled well into our family routine. He loves to be outdoors and so he often walks our three dogs on the nearby beach in the mornings to get some thinking time. On one of these walks he discovered a dog that had been abandoned by its owners. Naturally we took the dog straight to the vet and spent the next weeks nursing her back to health. Lucas was given the honour of naming her and thus Salinger "Sal" joined our family. We also encourage his interest in painting by taking him to local areas of natural beauty where he can hike and sketch to his heart's content. Shortly before LP's birth, Lucas approached me to ask if I could give him some photography tips so that he could catch Louis' precious first few months. Naturally I was delighted to share my passion with him and he has shown a real flair for the discipline!
Phoebe adapted suprisingly well to no longer being the elder bossy boots of the family! She especially enjoys performing with Camille and is very diligent in her attempt to perfect her French accent with her big sister.
Iris was less sure of the two new members of our family but quickly came to love 'her' baby Lulu more than anybody else in the world. I'm not sure she has realised that Louis is not her baby doll yet! Iris also has a special bond with Lucas who she enjoys 'helping' in the garden along with her Daddy.
Polly is also doing well. She is certainly giving Mila and Lucas an insight into what the terrible twos looks like though! Her talking is progressing at an alarming rate and I worry that she may actually be developing dry humour already! Like the rest of our children she is very artistic and enjoys herself best outside playing with the dogs. She really is our little wild child - she would be perfectly content to roll in the mud all day and is currently going through a phase of sleeping 'in the doggy's bed'. Not sure that the basket is all that comfortable for little girls but at least she no longer sneaks into our bed late at night!
