Some questions...
1. What do you think of Mary? Too old? Too boring?
2. Do you like the nn Molly?
3. If someone plans to use only a nn (like Molly), should they just name the child the nn?

1. What do you think of Mary? Too old? Too boring?--It's a little boring but when you think about it, Mary has a really pretty sound. I actually considered Mary Katherine (Mary Kate) for my eldest child and was recently thinking how pretty Mary Elizabeth (Mary Beth) is. Still, I think it's a little too ordinary for me even though it's not used that often any more, is it? I find it somewhat refreshing.
2. Do you like the nn Molly?--I like Molly well enough. I have to be honest and say that it makes me think of a dog's name. In fact, I had a beagle named Molly B when I was a child. Anyway, I do prefer the sound of Mary.
3. If someone plans to use only a nn (like Molly), should they just name the child the nn?--I usually prefer the formal name but in some instances when the nn is so different from the original name (Jack, Molly, Sally), I'd just go with the nn.
4. Do you like the combo Mary Elizabeth? This is one I'd probably consider using, as it's a family name that's special to me.--See #1 above. If it's a family name, then I'd use it and not worry what people would think. There are other forms of Mary you could use such as Maria, Marisa and Marielle.

1. I really like the name Mary. I think it is pretty and it ages well. Also it isn't used a lot nowadays, so it would be fresh as well as classic.
2. I don't like the nn Molly for Mary. I just don't think it works. I think Mary is just fine on its own, or if I used it I would probably call her Maidie.
3. If you want to call her Molly, just call her Molly. It saves confusion all round!
4. I like Mary Elizabeth and if its a family name I say go for it! I wouldn't personally use it because it would seem very royal family-ish to me as there were royal siblings Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I and there have been lots of repetition of Mary and Elizabeth together. I am English, though, so that could explain it.
5. Not Elizabeth! I think most classic or traditional names go well with Mary, nothing too modern or creative.

It's my niece's name.
She goes by Mira, but wishes she could be called Mary. However, if you're going to call the child Molly, name her that. My niece was so confused about being named one thing and going by another that it took her until she was eight to understand her proper name. :-) Mary Elizabeth is nice, but dull.

-- I like it quite a lot. It has a nice, dated vibe that makes it a little off in this day and age. At the same time, no one can consider it odd. So, I like it.

-- I like Mary better.

-- It really depends on the nn. Molly is basically an established name on its own now, so if you plan to call the girl Molly, I say use Molly. But if, say, you wanted to call her Dell, I would make her formal name Adele or Adella. Does that make sense?

I love Mary! My cousin just had a baby girl recently named Mary Catherine. They call her Mary or Mary Kate. I think Mary is ready for a comeback and I think it's such a sweet, pretty name. I have many relatives with this name as well.
Molly is very sweet and I think it makes a nice nickname for Mary. I also know a family with a Molly who's real name is Mary. She is about five.
Mary Elizabeth is a wonderful name! I love it! :)

1. I usually love classic names, but Mary has just never been a favourite of mine. I adore the names Maria, Marianne, Mrina, and a lot of other names which are related to Mary. Mary just doesn't have that special something I'm looking for in the names I love. It's still nice, though, and definitely not a bad choice for a name.
2. I do like the name Molly. It's very cute, though I can't really see why a name as short as Mary should have a nickname derived of it.

1. Mary is old, but so not boring. :) It's a classic that can be recycled and reused and never become stale. Perhaps due to a timeless quality or more simply the ability to pair just about any name with Mary and still be able to make a fabulous combo.
2. I like the nickname Molly, but I'd really prefer Molly as a separate, independent name. I also like Polly, too, which is a popular nickname for Mary in my family. Honestly, I don't think Mary requires a nickname. It's lovely as is.
3. Hmmm, if used as a pet name or term of endearment, I don't see a problem with using something like Molly. However, if Molly is going to be used as a nickname and will be the primary moniker, I think it's best to just go ahead and use Molly.

Katharine, or Katherine, is the only one that sounds remotely good with my ln. Although I do love the rest. Actually, Flora sounds okay, but my fn is Laura, so that would sound weird.

- It really depends on the name. If the nickname can stand on its own for the entirety of the person's life (imagine Georgie on a 35 year old woman), then it might be better to just use the nickname as the legal name.
