Bennett is the eldest son of Lord Cenel of Stormcliff, a region of a greater kingdom called Valdemar, which the House of Cenel governs for the King. Polygamy is traditional for the upper class in Valdemar, especially the royalty and the lords. Though they dominate society, men of marriageable status are less common than the women seeking to marry them. Girl children are born more frequently to Valdemarian couples, and survive more often to childbearing age than their brothers. Vows of celibacy for men are common among the middle and upper class, as certain sects of knights are understood to forgo any ties beyond loyalty to their order and their King.
Bennett is the only son of Lord Cenel by his most beloved wife. Though Valdemarian tradition and religion says that a man is permitted to marry as many women as he desires as long as he is able to support of them equally and favoritism is discouraged, it is clear to all of Stormcliff that Bennett's mother is their lord's preferred wife. The current Lord Cenel of Stormcliff, Bennett's father, has a total of four wives currently (he previously had five, but one died in childbirth), and fifteen children from them - eleven daughters and four sons.
As the heir to the Lordship of Stormcliff, Bennett is a widely respected young man. Celandine is the daughter of the neighboring Lord Sefton, and married Bennett just over a year ago. Their marriage was decided years ago, when Celandine was only ten years old, and their betrothal set to last until Celandine reached the age of majority at seventeen. She has not yet gotten pregnant by her new husband.
Johanna, however, did not expect to marry Bennett. She had been married several years ago to Bennett's younger brother Edmund, to whom she bore a daughter. A few months ago, a sickness swept through Edmund's stronghold killing him, and causing Johanna to lose the babe she carried, though their young daughter Sarah survived. Rather than see his daughter-in-law widowed, and because it is so hard for widows to remarry in Valdemar after bearing children, Lord Cenel asked his son Bennett to take Johanna for his second wife. Though hesitant to marry again so soon after marrying Celandine, it is considered highly honorable to take your brother's widow to wife in Valdemar, and Bennett agreed. Johanna and Edmund's daughter Sarah join Bennett and Celandine.

A year and a half has passed in Stormcliff, and Celandine has just given birth to Bennett's heir apparent, a son by the name of Owen. Johanna also bore another daughter, but she announced her pregnancy so soon after marrying Bennett, that it is unclear whether Lyda is the daughter of Bennett or Edmund.
