[Opinions] My Japanese friend's baby
My Japanese friend (the one to whose wedding I went to in 2009, for those who follow me on the Lounge) recently had her first child, a boy. His name is Kei, I don't know about the kanji they used.

I love Kei! It's one of my favorite Japanese names, and my favorite kanji for it is "firefly" but I'm not sure if the father's name is Keiji. In any case, congratulations to them!

Well, it's a relatively normal sound that can work for either gender... a decade or 2 back, he prob'ly would have had something with it (like Keita or Keisuke or something), but single kanji and short names are a little trendy these days. It's not amazing, but it's decent and, depending on what kanji they chose, it prob'ly won't have his teachers mumbling to themselves a Jpns. version of "Oy vey. What were those parents thinking?"

His dad's name is Keiji, actually. I for one prefer longer Japanese names for boys, the ones who like they're an old warrior's name...but it seems short, quirky names are popular all over the globe at the moment.

Yeah... and a couple other people and I were talking yesterday after church about the current name trends for Jpns. children and the challenges teachers have w/ these random little names... Short in many cases perhaps, but really random in the kanji and prn. department... sometimes rare kanji and/or prn.s. Kei would be appreciated simply on the basis of being readable.
