Message: "Polly, Pollyanna, Apollonia?"

I like Polly, but I'm not sure it would stand alone, or would age well - it is much too nicknamey to me. I know of course that Polly is originally a nickname for Mary, but honestly this connection is not obvious enough to make me use Mary as a full name.

Pollyanna and Apollonia are options, too, but Pollyanna is much too created/contracted for my taste, so that leaves Apollonia. My question is, what do you think of these names?

I highly dislike Pollyanna. It sounds childish.
I do like Apollonia. I also like Apolline and Polina.

Apollonia reminds me of the girl in the Prince movie "Purple Rain", so it sounds kind of cheap, like a porn star.

I can't stand Pollyanna! Apollonia is too out there for me, also. I think Polly would age well, most people don't even know it's a nn for Mary.

I like Apollonia, very sophisticated.

But if you're NEVER going to call her anything but Polly, I would use Polly as the formal name. Molly also originated as a nn for Mary, but I think Molly can stand alone as a name now.

I know a woman named Polly (Annabell). She despises her mn and says that Polly is "old" but she likes it well enough. One day we were having lunch (salads) and I asked her if she wanted a cracker! It was an innocent remark on my part but Polly didn't find it amusing. ;-)

Now Apollonia is different and has a pleasant sound. It's not something I'd ever use. I agree that Polly is so very different from Mary (in my mind). I don't care for Pollyanna at all.

I dislike Polly as a full name, and Pollyanna is nms. However, I love Apollonia, and Polly makes a great nickname for it : )

I'm not so fond of Polly, but I've always loved the name Apollonia. It's rare, rather quirky, and I love the mythological association. It's the sort of name I would love on a character or someone else, but one which I wouldn't give to my child. Pollyanna reminds me of an annoying children's book/movie.

I love Apollonia and looking around I also like the names related to it. I have a friend Pola whose full name is Polina, and I like them both a lot.

Apolliona

There is a lurker on the board who is going to be distressed that you found this name, as its her daughter's. I think its okay, but quite, quite fancy. If that doesn't bother you, go for it.
