H: Roman Lev Bertrand - Curly blonde hair, hazel eyes - architect (landscape architecture)
W: Eve Jemima Renard Bertrand - curly black hair, brown eyes - scientist (geologist)S: Theodore Dylan Bertrand
D: Vivien Dinah Bertrand
D: Iris Juno Bertrand
S: Nathaniel Amir Bertrand
S: Elliot Nikolai Bertrand
D: Fiona Adele BertrandYear One: They blow all the monetary wedding gifts on a pet horse named Apple. They are enjoying the carelessness and freedom of being young marrieds, including weekend jaunts to Greece and Spain.Year Two: On one of these jaunts, Eve unexpectedly gets pregnant, a complete shock to both of them as they had no real desire for children. They are living in a small one-bedroom apartment in the heart of London and are unable to find anything bigger in their price range. She gives birth to a beautiful baby boy, Theodore Dylan, with curly black hair like his mother and surprisingly green eyes. Theo is a colicky, difficult baby and he adjusts poorly to daycare. Roman decides to leave his firm to become a stay-at-home dad, since Eve makes a higher salary. By the end of their second year of marriage, Eve is working longer hours to support the family, Roman is miserable at home with Theo, and seven-month old Theo is just plain miserable. Year Three: Eve gets the opportunity to do field work in Spain for six months, after which she'll be promoted and receive an increase in salary. They are desperate for a bigger apartment and decide to take it. Roman joins a stay-at-home-dad's group and Theo's growing independence leads to a 180 in his personality. When Eve returns home, she is thrilled to find a sweet, giggly seventeen-month old toddler and a much happier and more relaxed husband.Year Four: All Eve's hard work and Roman's saving has paid off and they move to a positively luxurious three-bedroom flat just outside London. Now that Theo's difficult baby years are over, Eve and Roman are delighting in being parents and cautiously plan to have more children once Theo starts primary. (Theo turns two.)Year Five: Man plans, god laughs. Eve's birth control fails AGAIN and she gets pregnant. Vivien Dinah is born just after Theo's third birthday. She's a little clone of her mother, with curly jet-black hair and big brown eyes. She's a cuddly, sweet baby who sleeps through the night early and adores her big brother. Her parents breathe a sigh of relief.Year Six: With Roman at home serving as the primary parent, Eve's been able to focus on her career more than most women, and she receives a prestigious award for women working in scientific fields. Her husband is happy for her, but he misses the independence and autonomy of working outside the home, and he begins to wonder if they should use Eve's salary to invest in a nanny so he can work part-time. (Theo turns four, Vivien turns one.)Year Seven: Eve agrees that they can afford to have a carer in the home three days a week, and Roman picks up some part-time consulting jobs around London. With his extra salary, they have enough money to take their children on a vacation to see Roman's parents in Boston. It's the first time they've seen Vivien and the second time they've seen Theo, and the trip is a special one for all of them. (Theo turns five, Vivi turns two.)Year Eight: Sadly, shortly after the visit home, Roman's father dies unexpectedly of a stroke. He leaves a large sum to his son and daughter-in-law, and trusts for both of their children. Roman is heartbroken but the memories of their trip are a comfort. He and Eve are in a good place in their marriage, and with the importance of family at the forefront of their minds, they discuss the idea of having more children. (Theo turns six, Vivi turns three.)Year Nine: Finally, a planned pregnancy! Eve and Roman welcome another darling little girl, Iris Juno. She's a picture-perfect Gerber baby, with bright blue eyes and curly blonde hair like her Papa. Theo is an old hand at being a big brother,
but Vivi is utterly delighted with her "baby Iris." (Theo turns seven, Vivi turns four.)Year Ten: Eve moves to another firm in Edinburgh, and the family naturally follows suit, settling in a four-bedroom house in a posh area of the city, thanks mostly to Roman's inheritance. With just little Iris at home, Roman works twenty-five hours a week at an up-and-coming firm specializing in urban landscaping. (Theo turns eight, Vivi turns five, Iris turns one.)Year Eleven: Eve and Roman decide to sneak in one more baby before Eve hits the big 3-5 and they round out their family with a baby boy, Nathaniel Amir. He has green eyes like Theo and curly black hair, just like his mom, Theo, and Vivien. Nate is a high-needs baby but now that the children are older, they're a big help and Roman and Eve cope well. (Theo turns nine, Vivi turns six, and Iris turns two.)Year Twelve: Eve met a young Russian geologist in Spain and kept in touch with her in the subsequent years, serving as a mentor of sorts. Svetlana abruptly returned to Russia and cut off contact with Eve for months, before calling her one night in tears. She confessed that she got pregnant after a one-night stand and doesn't want to keep the baby. After much debate with her husband, Eve agrees. She contacts a lawyer and prepares her children for their unexpected new arrival: a little boy, Elliot Lev, with wispy red hair and grey eyes. Svetlana is deeply grateful to see how quickly Eve and Roman bond with their son. It is a difficult goodbye, but she knows she's doing the right thing. (Theo turns ten, Vivi turns seven, Iris turns three, Nate turns one.)Year Thirteen: Oh, crap. At the age of 37, with two children under five, Eve gets pregnant again! She and Roman are shocked but game to deal with it. Fiona Adele arrives with another head of curly black hair and brown eyes. Theo is over kids in general, but Vivi, Iris, and even little Nate and Elliot seem happy. Roman and Eve never planned on having such a large family-- six kids is positively unheard of in their circles-- and Eve gets her tubes tied to prevent yet another accident. (Theo turns eleven, Vivi turns eight, Iris turns four, Nate turns two, Elliot turns one.)Year Fourteen: Vivi has always had a passion for animals, and Iris is determined to follow in her sister's footsteps. When Vivi declares she won't eat anything that "has a Mummy or Papa," of course Iris follows suit. Inspired by their children and his own desire to lose weight and eat healthier, Eve and Roman decide to go vegetarian for a year. Eve, a fairly picky eater, has a difficult time adjusting, but the kids take to black bean burgers, veggie omelets, and sauteed mushrooms like gangbusters, and the experiment is declared a rousing success. Roman develops a passion for vegetarian cooking and is even recruited to teach a class on the subject at his children's private school. (Theo turns 12, Vivi turns 8, Iris turns 5, Nate turns 3, Elliot turns 2.)Year Fifteen: Coming full circle, Roman buys Eve a fifteen-year anniversary present: another horse, Daffodil. The children all enjoy riding her, with Iris showing special promise. (Theo turns 13, Vivi turns 6, Nate turns 4, Elliot turns 3, Fiona
turns 1.)
