I would assume Kaya was the spelling, and that it was pronounced like Maya. It's lovely and not trendy at all, to my ears. I think Kaia is an unnecessary complication, really, although I also love that spelling. Kaya = KY-ah, and KY-ah = Kaya to me. It's really a winner of a name.
