[Opinions] Rowan or Roan?
Both of these names have been on my mind lately. I'm writing a story and I cannot decide between the two. I know both are getting quite popular but I don't really mind that (at least for this story). WDYT of Rowan and/or Roan? What do you envision when you hear the name? Personalities, colors, whatever imagery pops into your head will do.This is for a male character, btw. I think Roan is strictly male but I know some people here like Rowan for a girl.

I don't really like either name as a fn, but of the 2, I think I'd prefer Rowan.

Where I live, Roan rhymes with own and Rowan rhymes more with owin' - anyway, it's got two clear syllables and Roan has one.I far prefer Rowan, and to me it is strictly male-only. Rowena for girls! And a rowan tree is wonderful ... no doubt roan-coloured animals are too, and there's a Roan Antelope which is or was also a mining company ... I think. Somewhere in Zimbabwe.

I like both, but I prefer Rowan. I think a decent number of people might be inclined to pronounce Roan with one syllable because of its similarity to Joan in terms of appearance, whereas Rowan probably won't be mispronounced as often because it's more familiar.Rowan makes me think of berries, red hair, and foliage. I love it. Roan makes me think of coastal Ireland due to the film "The Secret of Roan Inish."

I don't mind Rowan on a boy or girl. But Roan just reminds me of the pencil crayon colour "roan red" that I grew up with. Doesn't really seem like a name to me, although it definitely screams male if it must be on a person.

Thanks! Roan=cows for me now lol. I think Rowan is a truly unisex name as well.

I prefer Rowan, and I think it's fine for a boy.FWIW, I pronounce Roan differently, one syllable instead of two, and I associated it with the horse color.

Yes, I pronounce Roan with one syllable as well. Now that people are mentioning cows and horses that's all I can think of, too. Thanks!

Even though they have a similar sound and overall feel, they're pretty different for me. Because Rowan makes me think of the tree, and Roan makes me think of the color. Specifically a horse or cow of that color. While I can see Rowan feeling more feminine, I think either are fine for either gender since they're a nature name and a color name. For a character, I'd just decide if he's more tree-y or livestock-y.

Very good point, Llewella!I think I'm going to settle with Rowan. I actually totally forgot about the cow and horse association with Roan! :P And the character is more tree-like, I'd have to say! :D

Roan always makes me think of cows, I'm afraid.
I've always liked Rowan for a boy or a girl. As a boy's name I tend to first think of Rowan Atkinson (but that's not bad, I love him!) so I naturally attribute a comedic, clever personality to that name.Hope I helped.X

You did :)Roan for cows, huh? I can see that.I don't ever think of Rowan Atkinson. I always think of HIM as Mr. Bean. He has no real name to me. :P
