I've been liking this name for a while. I find it pretty. However, I'm concerned that it might sound too much like a black woman's name since most Esthers seem to be black.
What do you think of Esther? Does it work on a white baby?

Well, I know this is a troll post, but I just feel the need to say that I'm an Esther, and I'm named after my Jewish great-grandmother. I think the name is used predominately by Jewish people.

I don't recall ever meeting a black woman or girl named Esther. I have met a Japanese American Esther, a Caucasian Esther, and someone I know has a daughter named Ester who is not black either. I think it works for people of various races.
It has a warm, friendly vibe. Even though it's not a name I would use myself (I'm much more on an Estelle fan), I can appreciate it. I was happy when I heard that someone I met had a daughter named Ester. Esther / Ester is refreshing these days.

Um, Esther is Biblical. I've known several, and none black. One hispanic, two caucasian. My caucasian friend just had a baby girl and named her Esther.

I have a 3 1/2 year old niece named Esther and she is as white as white, with super blonde hair and blue eyes!! It suits her just fine, so yes, I think it works.

To me Esther is an old ladies' name and thus I can no longer envision it in modern use.

All the Esthers I have ever know have been white (one of them was half Chinese). I don't think Esther is associated with a specific race.

I think it's fine. The Esthers I've known have been white, but to me, their colour doesn't really matter. I know a blond-haired, blue-eyed Aiko and lots of Asian Cdn.s and Asian Americans with En. and other European names.

All the Esthers that I have met have been red-heads. No joke. And Jewish. I've met three of them, all red-heads, all Jewish. I do not think black woman at all. And even if it did, why is race an issue? I don't think my parents named me thinking "oh no someone might assume she's some preppy white girl" when in fact I'm biracial? There's just so much wrong with that. It's a biblical name, it's the name Hadassah adopts to keep from sounding too Jewish. Name your kid what you want, not what "fits your race." Blending these apparent racial lines is what gets rid of them.

No. Do not do it. Do not name a white baby Esther. For the rest of her life, everyone will think she's black and YOU WILL BE TO BLAME.

Then she should also have sisters named Keisha and Raynelle and brothers named Miles, Malcolm and Jerome so the whole family can have people sayin' they're black and beautiful, honey... because everyone is just going to assume that nobody but black people could possibly wear those names. :-P
