Technically it will be associated with cats anywhere, as "scientific" genus names are universal. Felis catus is felis catus whether it's a cat, gato, or koshka.I think Felina is safer in countries where Feline isn't already popular.

Well.. Most people don'te refer to animals by ther Linneaic names, but use a more common term.
The genus name is Felis, and the common name for the genus is, in English, Felines. Whereas in Dutch, the the scientific name is still Felis, but commonly referred to as: Katachtigen (those like cats).
Just as Canis --> Canines (English), but Canis --> Hondachtigen (Dutch)

Exactly. Which is why I'd think Felis would actually, in theory, be a better choice... because it's not used in common speech
