As someone who is fond of stating her dislike of most surnames on girls, I'm going to make a confession. I like Somer for a girl. I like Summer, and have stated so, but quite a while back I got the Somer spelling in my head and decided that I prefer that spelling to Summer.
What do you think of Somer for a girl? It gives me the feel of an antebellum Southern belle---like I can easily picture a Southern belle called Somer. Am I alone in this?

I must say, the minute I saw the title of your post and had not yet clicked on it, I thought Somer was probably short for Somerled or Somerset, which are both male names to me.
After reading your post, I still can't shake off the impression that Somer should be for a boy. It just seems too masculine on a girl for me. As such, obviously I prefer the spelling Summer on a girl.
By the way, 'somer' is archaic Dutch for 'summer' - the modern Dutch spelling is 'zomer'. The archaic Dutch form is still preserved in the Afrikaans language, which is largely descended from archaic Dutch.

I know a couple of girl Somers who are not as much "Southern Belle" as Budweiser chugging, hard-faced food and bev. workers.

Not keen, just looks like a misspelling of Summer.
I like Sumner for a boy and Somerled though.

I love Summer as a name. But the Somer spelling makes me want to use a long "o" sound, not a short "u" one. Sorry.

I like Summer, but even though Somer is pronounced the exact same way, I think Somer as a first name looks pretentious: "I love the sound of Summer but I have to make it look all surnamey and yooneek because Summer's spelling is just too pedestrian."
Anyway, I don't even like the look of Somers as a last name. It just looks all faux-English or something.
