It seems like a heavy corruption of Yvette. I'm not a fan.

I doubt it comes from Yvette, the root work is too different. If anything I think it's related to Abeille (Bee in french)
"The Latin apis had created the word ef ("bee") which in turn has created a diminutive avette ." - I think this is used in the South of France more than anywhere else but I can't be sure.

I know that it doesn't come from Yvette - I should have phrased my sentence differently, as I meant to say that it looks like a heavy corruption of Yvette. I'm sorry, I was feeling a little bit tired at the time of writing that. :)
I have to say, though, that I find Avette much more visually appealing than Avett. I would be much more eager to meet a woman named Avette than I would a man named Avett. ;)
