Mabel is really starting to grab me because it's such a sweet antique. I would possibly use Mabie as a nn. WDYT?

That's a jump-rope rhyme I remember from when I was little. It's much older than me of course.
I don't think of Mabel as a sweet antique. I think of it as such a stereotypical cranky-old-lady name that when I see it in a book, it always has the ring of satire about it.

I don't think Mabie would be a very nice nickname because it'd sound just like maybe.
To my ears and eyes, Mabel clunks. Rhyme label, table, able, cable, stable, gable... clunk. It clunks so hard because all the -able words are so homely and sturdy and workaday. Makes me think of a homely and sturdy and workaday person.
Maybelle (stress on the May part) seems nicer to me, although it looks silly.

I've always liked it for its retro charm. And my mother knew an older lady whose names were Zoe Mabel, which is delightful - Mabel Zoe is also good. I was at school with a Mabel Leigh who went by Leigh; there must have been a strong family tradition because her elder sisters were Stephanie Leigh and Eileen Mabel! I do prefer Mabel with Zoe ... and I'd like May as a nn better than the hesitant Mabie.

I personally can't disassociate the name from that grandmotherly feel.
Mabie makes me think of Arrested Development (not a bad thing, but not sure I'd want to associate a kid's name with it :).

I like it. It's easy to spell, sweet and simple, and not too common. Mabie is really cute!

I think Mabel is nice and I can actually see it gaining in popularity over the next few years. It seems to be getting more popular with celebrities, so that always effects the popularity of a name.
