[Opinions] Liz, as a nickname for Elizabeth and a survey
The Elizabeth thread below got me thinking. I never really liked any nicknames for Elizabeth. I mean I do like Ella and Lily - just not as nicknames.Anyway, Liz has really grown on me. And of course the full name would be Elizabeth which I also like a lot, even though it's a little boring. I wouldn't use it as there are many other names I like more than Elizabeth and also, as I said, it's too common. But I like the idea of Elizabeth nn Liz, it makes me think of old Hollywood glamour :P Maybe for a character. So what are your opinions of Elizabeth nn Liz?Survey:
How many Elizabeths do you know and how old are they? Any with alternate spellings?
How many went by:Elizabeth
Liz
Lizzie
Lib
Libby
Eliza
Lisa
Liza
Beth
Betty
Betsy
Bethie
Buffy
Effy
Lily
Ella
Ellie
Lizbeth
otherand how old are they? Did they go by the nickname all of time, most of the time, often or rarely?Which nicknames for Elizabeth do you like?
Any you dislike?
Any that don't make sense to you?

I like Elizabeth, but really dislike Liz.I have never met an Elizabeth. I do know two named Elizabeta, both go by their full name (one is occasionally called Beta by her family) and they both about 30. And one Erzsébet who goes by Erzsi and Erzsika, she's about 50.My fave form is Elisabeth, nn Bess. I don't really like any other nicknames for it, although Beth is ok. Lily, Buffy and Effy are the ones I don't get at all.

My mom is an Elizabeth who uses Liz everywhere except on official documents. It's always been her favorite, and apart from a Polish nickname only used by her parents and a short period where the nuns at her school called her Betty against her will, she's never been called anything else. Most of the adult Elizabeths I know or have known seem to go by a nickname most of the time; Liz and Beth are the most common, but I've known one Libby, one Tetty, and among the older Elizabeths, a couple Bettys, a Betsy, and a Bess. I can only think of two I know over age 25 who are always Elizabeth. The younger the Elizabeth, the more common it seems to be to use the name in full. The only Elizabeths I've met who have used Ellie & Lizzie have been young, too. I've never met an Elizabeth who uses Lib, Bethy (well, maybe the Beths are this once in a while), Buffy, Effy, or Lizbeth. Any Eliza, Lisa, Liza, or Ella I've known was named Eliza, Lisa, Liza, or Ella, not Elizabeth. I've never met an Elizabeth who uses Lily, either; they're either Lilys or it's short for Lilian or Lilliana. My favorite nicknames are Liz, Lizzie, Liesl, Libby, Beth, Betsy, Elle, Elisa, Elise, and plenty of others. I love how there's a great nickname to suit any Elizabeth, no matter what she's like. I've never met anyone who didn't spell it Elizabeth, but Elisabeth is another option, and I've seen Alyzabeth (yuck!) in local BAs.

I like Elizabeth and most often the nickname Liz is what I think of first. Every one I know named Elizabeth spells it this way but it can also be Elisabeth. However, I prefer Elisabeth. I know a 8th grader named Elizabeth who is most often called Liz or Lizzie.I have a cousin in her 30s named Elizabeth who is called Elizabeth often but also Liz.I know an Elizabeth that is 21 who always is called Beth. For a year I thought her name was Bethany because all Beths I knew where Bethany or just Beth and I'd never met an Elizabeth that went by Beth before that.I have a 6 year old cousin Lizabeth. Lizabeth is her full name, not Elizabeth. She is always called Libby. I know a little girl named Elizabeth. She's about 3 or 4. I don't know her too well but I've occasionally heard her family refer to her as Eliza. There aren't any I really don't like but I'm not too fond of Lizbeth or Lizbet. Lily, Effy, and Buffy don't make sense at all. I think Lisa only works when spelled Elisabeth. Others nicknames could be:
Elise with the spelling Elisabeth.
Bess can be but for me it seems like a stretch
Same with Bessie, Bessy, Betsy
Elsa with Elisabeth
I've heard Tetty too but I don't get it.
Bette While it is a stretch and I've never actually heard of it being done Zabeth, Zab, Zabbie, Sabeth, Sab, Sabbie could work and even I guess Seth with Elisabeth.

Elizabeth is nice, classic, but perhaps a little boring. Of the possible nicknames I find Liz a little dull but it's nice and better than Beth, Buffy or Bess. :)I know 7 Elizabeths only one of which goes by Elizabeth (She's about late 40s-early 50s)Liz - 1 (19)
Lizzie / Lizzy - 3 (19)
Libby - 1 (28-30)
Ellie - 1 (19)

I like Liz, but I prefer Lizzie. It used to be my favorite nickname for Elizabeth, but now I think Beth is my favorite.I've known a good amount of Elizabeths around my age (mid 20s). No alternate spellings. Most Elizabeths I've known have gone by a nickname more often than not.
Elizabeth - a few
Liz - most of them
Beth - a few
Betsy - 1
Ellie - 1I've also known an Eliza and another Betsy but I think those were their full names.

Oh, I don't like Liz at all. I'd much prefer Ella, Lissie, or Lizbeth.I know two Elizabeth's who went by Liz, one by Lizzie, one by Eliza, and one who was Lilibet when she was younger and just Elizabeth when she got to be fourteen or so.

I really don't like Liz as a nickname for Elizabeth. It's my least favorite nickname for Elizabeth, actually. I just think it sounds ugly.I have known two Elizabeths my entire life. One was a middle school friend that I had. She went by Beth and was never called Elizabeth. Another was a high school friend of my daughter's. She had no nickname---she was called Elizabeth. My middle school friend was my age, about a month older than I am, in fact, now that I think of it, I remember her birthday. It was June 3, so she's turning fifty-two today! The other Elizabeth was right around my daughter's age, so she's about thirty now, give or take a year.Oh, I sort of know one other Elisabeth, so there's an alternate spelling. A friend of my sister's. I only met her twice, but I used to hear about her quite a lot. She went by Lysa all of the time, and a lot of people didn't even realize that her name was actually Elisabeth. My sister didn't know it for a long time, and I didn't know it for a long time, and I remember that I was surprised when I found out. She would be about fifty now.The nicknames that I like are Eliza, Betty, and Betsy. The rest I don't care for. The ones that don't make sense to me are Buffy, Effy, and Lily. Those to me are just too much of a stretch. My parents considered naming me Elizabeth nn Beth, by the way, but in the end, obviously, decided against it.

Liz is kind of cute, actually. The only Liz I know is probably close to seventy. I went to school with an Elizabeth who just went by the full name, and a Beth who I think was just called Beth ann and not Elizabeth though I don't know for sure. I had a roommate named Beth also, it was definitely just Beth. I know a Bethany who goes by Beth also, plus my best friend from Oklahoma is Bethany and goes by that. Also I know a couple of Bettys, mostly over fifty, but I have no idea if they are just Betty or Elizabeth. I do know a Betty Jean, who is around 70, and Betty Jean is her full name and what she's called.I don't know anybody who uses Lisa or Ella or Lily as a nn for Elizabeth. Those have been considered full names in their own right for so long. If I heard somebody say today they were going to name their daughter Elizabeth and call her Lisa, I would wonder if they weren't just hedging their bets with the "non classical" Lisa, like they really wanted to use Lisa but they were not comfortable usign it as a full name because they are more concerned with name popularity and stylishness than they let on; Lisa is sort of dated, but Elizabeth never has been.I only really like Liz, as a matter of fact. Liza is kind of cute too but I never knew anybody actually called it. Buffy is the worst, it sounds like a poodle.
