Location: Russia. A move lands them in Italy.
Year #1:
Hroderich and Merita adopt a blue-eyed, blonde-haired 15-year old boy, Vikenti Makar, from Russia; it is his first home, his first family after being passed by numerous potential parents for reasons unknown (but suspected to be age... rich foreigners seek infants, not teenagers.) Even though they've been with the culture for the past year, there is an undeniable language and manner barrier that needs work.
Year #2:
A fire breaks-out, and consumes their entire house and belongings. Everyone is filled with humble gratitude for escaping without bodily harm. Vikenti is shaken; the occurrence has produced nightmares that are not able to be remedied.
Year #3:
Settling into a new home and reestablishing tranquility has not come easy. The family thinks it is best for a change of scenery after the incident... vacation to the United States! Hroderich is very excited to show his son, who now speaks decent English, where he grew up. Relatives flock and spoil him upon their first meeting.
Year #4:
Merita falls pregnant and gives birth to a wavy brown-haired, brown-eyed girl. In honor of a her Aunt, she is named Jacoba Truus. Vikenti reacts shyly; perhaps there is a small worry of being replaced.
Year #5:
New pet! A Toad finds it's way into their hearts, and is named Temple.
Year #6:
The military informs Hroderich of an imminent new assignment at the U.S. American Aviano Air Base in Naples, Italy. Shortly after, the family relocates. It has been hard-- an uprooting of life, and Vikenti is finding it difficult to adapt to the new living, language, and culture; often locking himself inside his bedroom.
Year #7:
Only a year after the move, Vikenti, at age 22, finds himself facing yet another... in the form of his recent acceptance to Harvard University in Boston, MA, USA. Merita's single sister, a petite, minky brown-haired woman by the name of Paula Nadine Brinkerhoff, is housing her nephew during his education.
Year #8:
After quite a bit of illness, Merita finally goes to the doctor. A series of testing results in the news that she is carrying triplets. Roughly nine months pass: two fraternal sons and one daughter enter the world. Simon Aloysius (wavy, musky red hair, and opaque green eyes), Paul Teunis (straight, dark blonde hair, and deep brown eyes), and Annelies Jetta (curly, raven black hair, and ocean-storm gray-blue eyes.)
Year #9:
As fate would have it, the parents, after (previously) tentatively considering adopting a new pet, chase a crawling 1-year-old Paul and discover him staring at a sickly mixed-breed dog with a bullet wound. The animal is nursed back to health; his growing coat suggesting possible Maremma Sheepdog ancestry. His sweet, protective temperament convinces the family to keep him.
They call him Aldo.
Year #10:
Merita loses her part-time Plumbing job. While that source of income has stopped, Hroderich has found light in his wife staying home with the kids more.
Year #11:
They receive a telephone-call from Boston. Vikenti, after stuttering furiously and uncontrollably pausing, explains that his girlfriend gave birth to his son a week ago. Hroderich and Merita are angry that he didn't wait for a more stable situation, that they are not married, and that he didn't trust them enough to speak with them earlier.
Dmitri Yermolai Kozlov Aben (sandy blonde hair, brown eyes) is born by Loraine Elnora Everill. The pair wanted the boy to have a double middle-name that included Vikenti's surname prior to his adoption by the Abens.
Vikenti is forced to move back into his Aunt Paula Nadine Brinkerhoff's apartment while he finishes his final year at Harvard... this time squeezing his girlfriend and newborn into a single room. Paula is patient, but grows frustrated.
