Aftokratira means Empress, Vasilissa means Queen, and Komissa means Countess. And adoption is very common among the nobility, so same sex couples are fine in this verse.
Alexandra was adopted from the Priestesses by Aftokratira Marina when she was fourteen, and when Marina saw how suited Alexandra was she began to groom her to take over the position one day. In fact, Alexandra has been handling most of Suleriun since Marina took sick nine months ago, though she could not formally inherit until the Aftokratira passed away.
Marina insisted that Alexandra marry, since she wanted to see her adopted daughter marry before she died, so Alexandra began to search among the nobility for a consort. A month into her search, Paraskeve Feuuari was presented at court and she fell in love with the teenagers dark skin and hair, and began to get to know the young Komissa. The two hit it off well enough and were married a month and a half later.
For Alexandra it is a lust match, although she hopes it will blossom into love as well since she greatly admires Paraskeve's strength and iron-will. But for Paraskeve it's purely political, her family has been training her and her siblings to be on the throne through whatever means necessary for their entire lives.
Suleriun is, overall, very happy with their new rulers, and they expect things to continue mostly as normal. And the newlyweds feel very confident about their ascension to the throne, since both have been trained for it.
