[Opinions] Daphne
What does everyone think of Daphne? Is it too childish sounding? Too much of a pet's name? I'm trying to warm up to it but I have some reservations. Thanks so much to those who reply!

I think it's cute. And I can easily imagine a smart, adult Daphne.

I think it's lovely and quite adult sounding, despite the ee ending. It carries it well. However, whenever I mention it lots of people from my generation think of scooby doo, lol! That still wouldn't put me off of it, but for some reason that is the strongest association most people seem to have.

I don't think it's childish; quite the opposite in fact - it sounds like an old lady's name. I imagine Daphne as an old lady with a girly, lispy voice who is quite patronising and prim-and-proper. I don't like the name at all.

I've met an adult named Daphne, and I think it works for various ages. I don't find it any more childish sounding than Stephanie, Courtney, or most other names ending with a "nee" sound. What keeps me from liking it more is that it makes me think of the words "daft" and "daffy." Its mythological background appeals to me, and if it didn't happen to be close to the words "daft" and "daffy", it might be on my list.

I don't mind the name Daphne at all. I quite like it actually and don't find it childish at all. I also don't see it as a pet's name at all. I like the fact that it isn't really common and you never hear on little girl's anymore, which is a shame.

I think Daphne is darling although I'm not sure I'd ever use it for the reasons you suggest. I know I'd likely use it for a pet. I've only known one and we all called her Daffy. Why she wanted to be called that, I'll never know.

Daphne is the name of my next niece, due in October. I don't think it's childish as much as airy, energetic, and youthful, and I definitely don't see it as a dog or cat name. There are some things about it that make it a little hard to love, such as its similarity to Daffy and daft, but it's still a pretty name. It has a real sweetness to it.

Urgh I hate Daphne. I think it's ugly and limp. I think of Scooby Doo and Malory Towers.

I think it sounds snooty and also congested somehow, like a stuffy nose. When I was about ten or so MTV had a show of call-in requests on Friday nights. One time this girl called up from California to request a video. I forget which one. Her name was Daphne and she had this total Valley Girl accent, like, really grody to the max. It fitted her name perfectly.

I love Daphne. I would say it sounds youthful, rather than childish. Playful and flowery. Not a pet's name at all! The horror! The only Daphne I know is the loveliest lady in her eighties who is so generous and bright. She is a big influence on my perception of the name.
