The marriage of Henry's younger sister Clementina was a much less enjoyable affair than anyone could have wished. She was only nineteen at the time. His parents Dante and Elizabeth, as well as his younger brother Nicholas, had begged her to at least wait, as had Maddalena. No one approved of the husband she had chosen; he was incredibly handsome, immensely rich, and from one of the finest families in Camora, but there was something that Clementina's family could not approve of. For one, he was fifteen years her senior, an age difference they were uncomfortable with, especially at her young age. And for another, Maddalena knew him to have been something of a womanizer in his youth. But Clementina was the baby of the family and incredibly in love with him, and with no evidence of anything really against him they thought they had no real reason to try and refuse her. Maddalena herself arranged and hosted the wedding, which was held when Anna was about six months old.
For almost the full first year Clementina seemed very happy. She rarely visited her family, explaining that Ottavio (her husband) did not like her to be away from him, but she wrote frequently and her letters were full of how much she loved her new home and new husband. But towards the end of the first year, her letters came less frequently and seemed to have a sadder tone; she revealed that she was often alone, as Ottavio had taken to leaving her alone for days on end to go on hunting or business trips.
Halfway through their second year of marriage, it became painfully obvious that he was being unfaithful to her. Clementina confronted him about it and demanded he end his affairs--as there were multiple--but he refused. In revenge, Clementina then initiated an affair of her own, with her husband's young protege Orlando. Orlando, only eighteen at the time, was infatuated with the twenty-one-year-old noblewoman. Clementina did not reciprocate and didn't even realize how he felt until she informed him he had impregnated her (only two months into their affair). Six months into the affair, Ottavio discovered it and demanded that she end it. Clementina informed him that she was pregnant, and in a fit of rage Ottavio beat her nearly senseless. That very night Clementina left and went to her brother. Henry, stunned by her story, spoke to the then-pregnant Maddalena, and the two gave her their protection and help in dissolving her marriage (Camora allows divorce on the grounds of cruelty and infidelity). Orlando and Ottavio both soon arrived, Orlando seeking protection from Ottavio. Ottavio was arrested and the marriage was quickly dissolved. Maddalena, as part of Clementina's arrangement, had ordered her to come clean to Orlando, whom she pitied. The boy was heartbroken when Clementina told him she did not love him, but begged to be allowed to be part of his child's life. Clementina agreed, but unfortunately the beating she had suffered had consequences. Only a few days after arriving, Clementina miscarried. The entire family was devastated, and Clementina and Orlando were heartbroken. The kingdom was shocked by the scandal--Clementina had always been so well-liked--but the worst of it was kept from them.
A few months after Clementina's unfortunate events, Maddalena gave birth to a son. A beautiful baby boy, healthy and plump and sweet, was just what the family needed to shake them out of their sadness. Maddalena and Henry had decided on the name Luciano for a son, and for his second name chose Clemente. It was both after Clementina and because it meant "gentle," for what they want their son to be (unlike Ottavio). Nicholas is after Henry's brother, David and Piero were chosen by the children. They were all excited for their new brother, and Anna considers him an early birthday present as he was born less than two months before her third birthday.
