[Opinions] Dolly
Do you think that Dolly could work at the present time, or is it too childish? Should it stay a nickname for Dorothy, which is the way it started, or is it okay on its own?

I've got a young (20s, I'd guess) Dolly colleague who isn't a Dorothy. She's a cheerful, efficient, attractive and positive person who has single-handedly converted 40 nerds to unstinting praise of herself and her name.
Of course, if she'd been gloomy and withdrawn, we'd all have had other ideas.

Welcome to Dollywood, the Dolly Parton themed theme park.
I think of the little girl from "The Family Circus" comic and my grandfather; he called all his granddaughters "Dolly" from time to time. It was a sort of generic girls' nickname to him, the way Bud and Stretch were for his grandsons.
Dolly is quaint, innocent, a little folksy, and very, very childish. Cute, but I think it's best as a nn.

A bit too childish, perhaps.
My father had a sister who died as a child of seven, named Dolly. I always thought it was a nickname for Dorothy, but no, he actual name was Dolina.

It's kind of cute, but cute like a pet's name is. I don't really see it being used today.
The one Dolly I ever knew was short for Dolores.

Dolly is an adorable nn that could work today. But it is a nn. It needs something of substance to back it up. If you don't care for Dorothy enough to use it, then how about Dorothea, Theodora / Dora, Gwendolen, Dolores?
It was Dolley Madison's legal name, so using that precident, it could stand on its own. But, other than Madison and Parton, I think it's too childish.
Have you seen PBS' American Experience episode on Dolley Madison? It's very well done. It made me love the name all the more, except I still don't care for her spelling of the name. But still . . . .
No. But Madison is my state's capital, and I went to college there, so maybe she sticks into my mind a bit more than for others. She was talked about a bit in the presidency- an elective history class where I work. My students really liked that class.
I, too, think of Dolly Parton when I hear this.
I dont see a problem with giving Dolly as a given name. Actually Big Boy (the comic book character and mascot for the restaurants)'s "girlfriend" named Dolly.
And actually Dolly is Dolly Parton's given name with her middle name being Rebecca.

I definitely think that Dolly shouldn't be a name itself, it should just be a nickname for Dorothy, though I wouldn't even use that nickname for it. I think it's too childish and too cute to be a first name, it's not professional.
I think it's childish and/or "rednecky" on its own.
...Parton.
That's who I instantly think of. It's a good namesake, though.
I think it's sweet as a NN, but it wouldn't bother me if someone used it as a full name.

Oh, Dolly.
I had a little monkey lost when I was a child, and I named her Dolly. I got her for christmas the year I was 7, and I brought that toy monkey with me everywhere. To school, hospital, holidays, you name it. She actually meant a great deal to me, so I associate Dolly with love and happiness. Dolly is actually a GP of mine and it's on my PNL. I probably wouldn't use it as a FN - it is a bit childish and nicknamey. But as a nickname, or middle name, why not?

I adore it, and it's probably my number one name. I hesitate that it's too childish, but I don't like any of the fuller names, so I might use it on it's own. My grandmother's name was Dolly. I also considered Dahlia "Dolly". Or something like Elizabeth and call her Dolly. IDK! I love it though!
I saw today that some "celebrities" named their daughter Dolly: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2177984/Chantelle-Houghton-Alex-Reid-FINALLY-baby-Dolly.html
It does seem a little childish and would prefer to see it as a nn for Dorothy, but I think it is usable on its own.

Definitely a nickname. Seems very childish and too tied to Dolly Parton.
