Help[Opinions] Melanie, Melody or Mallory? (more)
These names have all really grown on me in the past couple of weeks. I don't care for the nicknames Mel or Mal, but I think they'd be easily avoidable as I've known several Melanies who never went by a nickname. I think Mellie is kind of cute.
Anyway, I'd definitely have to decide between them as they are way too close for sisters.
1) Melanie, Melody or Mallory and why?
2) Could you rank them from favorite to least favorite?
3) Please give me your impression of all three names (colors, images, what she'd be like, what her parents would be like, looks, associations with movie or book characters etc)
4) Have you ever met any girls with these names?
5) Do you consider any of them to be dated?

Mallory. Melanie is cool and cute, but the "ie" is too girly IMO, and Melody is girly and borderline trendy.
Mallory, Melody, Melanie (although I like them all)
Mallory: Long dark hair, fierce personality; Melody: Light hair, cheery/peppy personality, maybe musical, popular; Melanie: Brown hair, dreamy and cute personality
I actually can't think of any Melanies, Mallorys, or Melodys I know... I didn't realize I didn't know any though.
Melanie might be dated. Maybe the others are slightly, but I don't think any of them are too dated to use.

1) Melanie, Melody or Mallory and why? Melanie because I find it the most substantial and because the 'mal' prefix in many words indicates something negative. Even Mallory has an "unfortunate" meaning.
2) Could you rank them from favorite to least favorite? Melanie, Melody, Mallory

Melanie -- sweet yet is not a shrinking violet, has strength
Melody -- a free spirit, whimsical
Mallory -- makes me think of the old TV show, Family Ties and the ditzy character, Mallory
4) Have you ever met any girls with these names? Yes.
5) Do you consider any of them to be dated? All of them are dated to a certain extent. Melanie is the most fresh in my mind.

I like Melody the best because it has a sing-songy feel to it :p

I know 2 Melanie's. One is 26, very self-centred, think TOWIE. The second one is 12, tomboy, polite, reserved girl

Melanie - I like this name, and think of Olivia de Havilland in GWTW but don't think it suits a blonde or redhead
Mallory - loathsome name, horrible meaning - why take this when Hilary or Valerie beckon?

Melody - happy girl
Melanie - sensible girl
Mallory - I see Justine Bateman
All these names are warmish pinky red to me - synaesthesia means to me M is that colour and so are words that start with M

Melody - I have a dim recollection of one in another form at school
Melanie - yes, a friend of a friend,she's qualified as a doctor
5) Do you consider any of them to be dated? Melanie a tad '70snbut not so much to make it unusable

1. Melanie. I find it pretty. I don't find Mallory pretty at all. It makes me think of marshmallows. Also the first syllable, "Mal", makes me think of words such as "malcontent" and "maladjusted." Melody is pretty, but to me it doesn't have as much dignity as Melanie, as it's a word name, and it always strikes me as a name that would only be used by people who have more of a vested interest in music than the average person.
2. Favorite: Melanie. Second favorite: Melody. Least favorite: Mallory.
3. I would imagine the parents of a Melanie to be well-educated, upper middle class people. I would imagine the parents of a Melody to of a lower socio-economic status than the parents of a Melanie, and to be amateur musicians. I would imagine the parents of a Mallory to be people who had to deal with a teen pregnancy. I don't have any images of what a girl with any of the three names would be like, as, of course, it would have been the parents who gave the name, not the girl. Melanie makes me think of Melanie in "GWTW", which is pretty common, and Mallory makes me think of the girl in "Family Ties." A show in which the parents were aging hippies. Which is why maybe I think of it as a name that a young, immature person would give.

One of those people who always felt that they were born the wrong gender. The name given this person at birth was John, but when she decided to become a female, she chose a female name, and the name she chose was Melanie.

I like Melanie best, by a long shot. So pretty, and not dated at all. I cannot stand Mallory, it seems dated strictly to the eighties even though I know it isn't. I picture a snobby rich girl who talks like a baby to get what she wants from Daddy.
Melody is okay but I don't like it as much as Melanie. I keep thinking there was a Muppet named Melody, because I picture her in my head, but the Muppet I'm thinking of is Prairie Dawn.

I don't really get that sort of impression with names. The only character I can think of is River Song (from Doctor Who)'s real name is Melody.

Mallory's always seemed a bit 80s to me. Based off popularity data, it appeared from nowhere in the early 80s.

1) Melanie, Melody or Mallory and why? I don't know that many Melanies but it still seems a bit 1980's popular to me. Mallory is cute but for me just doesn't have the same gorgeous sound that Melody does. I also have a friend named Melody who has really given me a wonderful image of the name.

Melanie seems more of the popular girl, or an older mother type lady who wears 80's mom jeans but is pretty cool anyway.
Mallory is cute and spunky, a bit of a tomboy maybe and might try out for the cheerleaders.
Melody is gentle and mild-mannered but with beautiful dark features.
4) Have you ever met any girls with these names? I know a Mallory, she's strawberry blond with freckles and really cute and spunky. The Melanie I know is really sweet, a bit geeky quirky and has gorgeous brown curly hair. I know two Melodys, one is a lady with reddish hair, the other is my friend who is about 18-years-old and has dark eyes and hair and a slightly tanned skin tone.
5) Do you consider any of them to be dated? Melanie is a bit, also that's the one that is most likely to be nicknamed "Mel" I think. Melody is pretty current as it's never been overly popular. Mallory is a bit more 90's and early 2000's but it hasn't been used in a while so it's current.
As a side note, I think that Melody and Mallory could probably be used as sisters names if you liked both of them well enough. Melanie and Melody are the ones that are pretty much unable to be used together because they are so close. My friend Melody gets called Melanie sometimes because people mess her name up sometimes.

Funny that you mention it because I just thought that Melody and Mallory actually sound quite distinctive because of the D in Melody. I think they are still too similar for me, though. The ones I would never pair together are Mallory and Melanie. I actually know sister named this and think they are way too close.

Mallory: I've honestly no idea about this name, I just don't like the sound of it, it sounds too surname-y and black.
