[Opinions] Kestrel
I just received an email from someone called Kestrel. It's the first time I've seen this name on a real person, although I've seen it as a book character's name before. What do you think of Kestrel? I actually think I really like it! I don't tend to be in to unusual names, but I just think it has a really nice sound.

I dislike the name and sound. It seems trendy and, even though it's unfamiliar, it seems outmoded.

Bird of prey name is pretty cool sounding to see in real life.

I'm always surprised that it's a female name. I used it in multiple CAFs as a boy's name because I had no idea. It seems so masculine to me, both because of the sound and because I tend to lump "bird of prey" names in with the boys. Regardless, it's rare enough that I think it would work for either sex, and I like it quite a bit. It doesn't sound as aggressive as names like Talon or Hawk, nor as poncey and overbred as Peregrine.

The only Kestrel I know is a man in his 20's.....

I enjoy it as a middle name but, sound-wise, it still feels strange to me as a first name.

It took me a while to get used to Kestrel as a girl's name. I assumed it was for boys. Now, I'm really digging it for a girl. There aren't many K names that I like for a girl so I'm always happy to add one. Kestrel Mariah is my stock combo for it.

I have been totally in love with Kestrel lately, for a boy. It's probably in my top 5 right now. I don't mind it on a girl either but it just strikes me as more masculine sounding - maybe because of its similarity to Kester

I really like the name. I've never met anyone with this name though. I may consider using it one day.

What about gender? I know it says girls name but in my experience all nature names work for both genders unless it is a very common name that is associated with one gender.Personally I love Kestrel but I prefer it for a boy than for a girl. Though it works for both.
