Help[Opinions] Tauriel
I was looking at the Hobbit film's info on Wikipedia, and discovered that Evangeline Lily will play a character named "Tauriel," which apparently means, "Daughter of Mirkwood."
Anyway, WDYT? I like the look of it, seems very pretty and elegant, just not sure how they pronounce it.

Before I even read your post, I knew it was a Tolkien name. I'm not a huge fan of it, though.

Ditto, but if I saw it in real life, I'd approve of it more than other names. (mash-ups, horrible spellings etc)

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced TOU-rie-el, with the initial syllable rhyming with English "cow". It doesn't mean "daughter of Mirkwood", but more generically "Daughter of the forest". taur = "forest", -iel = "daughter of" (suffix).
I'm also 98% certain that the name is formed ungrammatically. AU > O when there is a suffix, so it should be Toriel. (I obviously spent too much time on Sindarin in my freshman year of high school...)

IMO 'Tau' makes it sound to masculine out of the LOTR world, but because of the '-riel', it sounds a tad too girly to be used as a boy's.

I'm wanting to pronounce the first syllable like Taurus. Sound-wise, it fits into the Tolkien family alright, I guess, but, when I first saw it mentioned in an article about the film, I did immediately think "it's a nice try, but Tolkien would have done better".
I prefer Tinuviel and have Alice Tinuviel as a GP. :)
