1) I don't think it is either dated or boring however for me it is a bit of a thuggish name - sorry.
2) The only one I have heard of was a character in a programme, not very popular here at all.
3) No I don't pronounce them anywhere near similiar. Erin is eh-RIN while Aaron is aah-RON. I'm from the West Midlands in England.
