1) I prefer Sylvia. I know Silvia is the original and the standard form in many languages, but it never looks quite right to me. I also like Sylvie, the French form, and I go back and forth on whether I prefer it or Sylvia.
2) I like it, but I don't know that I'd use it. My great-grandmother was a Sylva (no "I"). We were just close enough that using a Syl- name would feel like I was naming a child after her, but not close enough that I would want to do so.
3) I think of an older person with a strong personality, but a Sylvia could be anyone. I'm always surprised Sylvia isn't more popular. It seems like it should be Sophia's natural successor.
4) Sylvia Plath, "Sylvia" the comic strip, the ballet, Rhea Silvia (mother of Romulus and Remus), psychic Sylvia Browne. I feel like there's a big one I'm forgetting...
