I suspect you are right, and in most cases they are ways to acquire those nnsI vastly prefer Lilian to Lillian - but I know no child or teen by either spelling, nor by Evelyn.
A Lilian at school always went by the full name - I always wondered why she had such an outdated name, but she had a Scottish surname so I suspect with hindsight that she was named in honour of a relative called Lilias
I know three 60-ish Evelyns - one is always called Eve and the other two go by the full name. My already elderly music teacher at school was an Evelyn known as Eve - her sister was Sylvia
