[Opinions] Melanie
What do you think of Melanie? Do you think it's too boring? I've asked on another message board before and many people told me they find it trashy. Do you think so? If so why? I wonder whether Melanie Griffiths might have given the name a negative image or whether there's another negative association.I had two Melanies in a class at one point so growing up I thought of it as common but I've hardly met any since. I guess Mel is avoidable (I don't really care for it much) as the two Melanies I grew up with were never called Mel, even though one was called Mellie. What else does it make you think of? Gone with the Wind? I don't particularly care for the character but I guess the association isn't too strong. It was a bit more common in the 70s so I wonder whether people see it as dated. Or can you see it rising again soon?

I always liked Melanie. It's very pretty, easy to spell and say and unequivocally a female name. I've known quite a few Melanies of all ages.I don't see it as a trashy name at all, unless it's misspelled like meloni or Melony. That just sounds like fruit salad.

When I was small there was a drapery/clothing store near us called Melanie. It was pronounced meh-LAH-nee
I didn't realise that Melanie was a girl's name until much later, but I don't think of GWTW when I hear it - I think of British writer Melanie Phillips (born in the 1950s).
I only know one Melanie, an Australian doctor in her 30s, and the name has no negative connotations for me.
It's pretty and pleasing, although in view of the meaning I don't think it suits blondes - just as I don't think Flavia and Xanthe suit brunettes!
So I'd avoid it for a fair blue-eyed baby!
Although not usually a fan of modern names, I do like a few - and one is Melody - I'd use Melody but not Melanie - Melody just appeals to me more

I did think it was sort of trashy until I met the most fabulous British Melanie. I think it's perceived very differently over there and that has changed my opinion of it slightly. It's a nice enough sound, but it does seem kind of dated and unfashionable now. I just don't love it. However, it is MILES better than Melissa, which I loathe.
