Ellie is the full name of my best friend. I once knew an Eleanor but I think she went by Elle and Eleanor more than Ellie. I think it can definitely stand on it's own though I am a little bias. I slightly prefer Eleanor nn Ellie. I have never even contemplated getting it confused with Allie - I also have never met one, whether it be a nickname or full name. I do like Allie a lot as both a full name and a nickname though.
