The Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames (1997) has:
"from a place called
Ash
or
Nash
or 'dweller by the ash-tree'"
The Oxford Dictionary of English Place-names (1998)adds: "… with initial N from ME 'atten' (at the)."
Hope
this helps
Andy
