[Opinions] Luna
Luna has really grown on me. Opinions? Too loony? Getting too common?

Luna is a name that also grew on me, I really liked it and therefore put it on my list, but I drew a complete blank when it came to combos - both with Luna in the first spot and as a middle name - so I think I removed it from my list. I'd still be happy to see it on a child though. I think maybe because of Harry Potter it may become more popular.
Good name for a pet or a zoo animal, but hard to take seriously on a person.
I absolutely LOVE it. One of my top picks for girls.
This is my little cousin's name. She is five years old.
The name itself is...okay. A little too dreamy and "out there" for my personal taste. I like names with a bit more weight to them. My cousin Luna is autistic, so hopefully other kids won't make fun of her name by adding -tic at the end of it. I have a feeling that might happen, but I guess they would do that regardless of whether or not she was challenged.
One more thing: this name seems to be gathering steam because of Luna Lovegood, and...I don't get why everyone loves that character. Yes, she's sweet, but she has SO MANY FANS, and I never understood WHY. Anyone want to enlighten me?

My beliefs on that
I'm a huge Luna fan. I think people liked her because she was so different. She cast a special light on the HP crew. She spoke the plain truth in a world where everything was secretive and when Harry could only learn things when it was the perfect timing for Dumbledore (and plot's sake). She had a thought and she said it versus the millions of other characters who kept everything inside until it was appropriate to say.
She marched to her own drum and I think almost everyone, if not just a lot of people, consider themselves weird. And they like the underdog. So here was a girl who was clearly weird and clearly the underdog so people just latched on. Plus, she was entertaining! At least, to me. :)

See, her weirdness was too forced to me. I did like the character, but I didn't love her. I hear a lot of people say Harry should have ended up with her at the end, but how would that have worked? Luna was nice, but she and Harry wouldn't have had ANYTHING to talk about. YMMV.

I'm trying to think back when I first read the books. I think her first appearance was the 5th one so I probably read that when it first came out. I.... honestly cannot remember my initial reaction to her. I know I liked her but I don't know how much. Probably a lot as I like quirk.
Too forced, eh? I could actually see that. And, really, upon my rereading of the book I think I prefer Movie Luna to Book Luna. Which is rare since, while I love and own all the movies, they are seriously lacking.
But I'm one of those people who think Harry should have ended up with her (but I'm no "shipper") simply because I hated Ginny. She was such a Mary Sue. "Ginny did this and everyone laughed." "Ginny did this and it was amazing." "Ginny did this and was fantastic at it." "Ginny did this and it was spunky and great and everyone's in love with Ginny because she's the perfect embodiment of a good girlfriend" Blah blah Ginny.

I read something excellent on Ginny
She's a Mary Sue because the books are through "Harry Vision" and so as soon as Harry notices her, it's all "omg ginny is perfect"

I like Ginny. Guess I'm in the other camp.
I like Luna too, I think it's a really sweet, simple, and quite elegant name. But I would only ever use it as a middle name, because my first thought (and probably many other people's) is always Luna Lovegood.
Luna Lovegood is such an individual, unique character (and most likely the first encounter a lot of people had with the name Luna) that a person called Luna could get "but you're nothing like Luna!" It's like naming your child Hermione. Even if you genuinely like the name and were not inspired by Harry Potter in any way, it still seems like that because the name is so uncommon.
Is Luna actually getting common?? Not where I live, at least. But it probably will as the Harry Potter generation starts to have babies.
And with the 'loony' element, well Luna does kind of lend itself to less desirable nicknames, and I'm sure heaps of people would see it as a ridiculous name choice (but I'd say that happens with millions of names).

luna is a great name in my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with it without the moon we would die.
