I like it. It is quite sweet. I don't think of it as being fusty. Alva and Alba are also nice.
For your second question, I'm not American so I wouldn't know. But I personally wouldn't perceive it to be a Latin American name - in truth I'd never thought of it before as such. It's used in many European countries.
