I ran into a homeless dude last night while listening to a Woody Guthrie song. Guthrie's full name was Woodrow Wilson Guthrie. This guy's full name was Woodrow Wilson Bailey III. Thought that was pretty damn neat.
Anyway, I really like the name Woody. If I were to ever use it it would likey just be on its own, but I'm wondering what potential long forms are out there... I don't really like Woodrow.

I don't like Woody at all. I think of Toy Story, Woody Woodpecker and slang for erections. None of these are particularly good associations!
If I had to use it, it would be as a nickname for Edward.

A friend of my boyfriend and me has a dog named Woodford (after Woodford whiskey). He is usually just called Woody and his (loose) middle name is Richard so our friend occasionally calls him Whiskey Dick, heh.
I think Woody is problematic as a nickname, but I think I have learned to warm to it a bit at least for animals.

Yeah Woody seems like it would be perfecto for an animal, right? It's cute and down to earth, but not Max Lucy Bailey or Sadie. Maybe I'll think about that first.

Woody was my creepy one legged uncle's nickname, they called him that because of his wooden leg so that is all I think of. Woodrow is kind of nice in my opinion but Woody just makes me think of fake legs and slang for boners.

Why would you not like Woodrow!? It's so cool compared to other wood-name options you might dream up. I love Woodrow. Woody is the main reason I don't like it more. I just keep thinking of the crude slang term, and how it sounds sort of like Rudy said through a mouthful of food. It seems about as revivable as Dick. But when you mention Woody Guthrie, it doesn't seem as bad.

I like Woodrow, and actually I'm a big fan of Woody Harrelson, so I want to like it more than I do. But aside from the unshakable slang associations, it just doesn't sound nice. I keep doing this breathy progression in my head: woody ---> wooty --->whooty ---> hooty ..... Hootie and the Blowfish!

There are surnames / place names with "wood" in them. Sherwood, Linwood, Woodston, Woodbridge, Lockwood, Woodford, Woodman, Brentwood, Haywood, Greenwood, Kirkwood, etc. etc.

Good ideas. Wedgewood is actually kinda funny, since I life really close to a street Wedgewood. Maybe I could get dogs and name them Wedgie and Woody

We had a conversation. I don't know it was his real name, but I hadn't told him I was listening to Woody Guthrie before, so it would have been pretty goofy and random for him to have lied.
