Everything is running very smoothly in the Rezník-Holmwood family. Jake makes a fair amount of money by writing music and occasionally performing at local venues and Don has opened his second café. The triplets take up most of their time, and when they are put to sleep, Don and Jake try to make time for Sadie, Evan and Rafael. Sadie has become a teenager and just like all other teenagers, she thinks her entire family is incredibly embarrassing. Her biggest hobby is watching Glee, High school musical and other musicals, and of course singing along. For her 14th birthday, Don and Jake gave her professional singing classes and Jake is very proud to have a daughter who follows in his footsteps.
Evan loves the triplets more than any twelve year old have ever loved toddlers. He spends most of his time hanging out with them and playing with them. He especially connects with Hemi, seeing as they both seem to have a thing for balls (basket balls, footballs, rugby balls, soccer balls). Evan is very sporty and Jake and Don think they're seeing a potential athlete in him...
Rafael also likes to practice sports with his siblings, but he is incredibly competitive and hates losing. He usually ends up crying if he doesn't win. Don and Jake try to steer him into hobbies were there isn't as much focus on winning and losing, since he gets so sour otherwise.
Hemi, Nella and Ash are adorable. Jake and Don finds that it's quite easy to look after them, compared to their other children, since if they are left alone, they play with each other. When Sadie, Evan and Rafael were younger, they didn't have sibling that close and therefore Jake and Don had to watch them a lot more to keep them entertained.
Jake and Don thought they were done adopting when Don got a phone call from his mother one day. Don hadn't heard from her in years, since she didn't really approve of his relationship with Jake. She already disliked the fact that her son was gay, but their relationship had tensed up even more since she was quite racist and disapproved of Don's relationship with a "foreigner", as she called Jake. Therefore, Don barely wanted to pick up the phone when she was calling, but after all, he felt he had to, since it was probably quite serious.
It was - one of Don's cousins had died in a car crash six months after giving birth to her son. The father wasn't around, and no one else in her family wanted to take care of the child either - he was dark skinned, his absent father had been a muslim from Iraq, and his name was Zain. In Don's family, that was disapproved of. Still, no one wanted to give the child to foster care, so Don's mother had called Don, since she knew he had adopted "foreign children" before.
Although Don's mother was hateful and left a bitter taste in Don's mouth, his heart ached for the little child left with no one to take care of him. Don and Jake took him in and vowed he would never have to meet with that side of his family again, if he didn't want to. Now Zain Llewellyn Holmwood is in a loving family.
