Marla is rather nice, I think I like it but mostly because it reminds me of one of my favorites Marlena (mar-LAY-nah)! :)
Marla Rose would be very pretty and rather refreshing as it isn't used very often and it's not at all popular! John, Max & Marla would be so nice! :)

I think that's what appeals to me about the name as well, that it is pretty, but not heard much at all; refreshing, like you said. I also realized that what I like very much about it is that it is a two syllable name that doesn't lend itself to a nickname like Catherine does for example. That is one of the things I like about the name Phoebe as well, but my husband doesn't like the name Phoebe unfortunately. I think that with formal sounding names (like Catherine), that are also lengthy letter-wise, people look to shorten them, and that's what is bugging me about Catherine I think.
ETA: I know the name Marlena from a soap opera (Days of Our Lives), it is pretty. :-)
