[Opinions] Saskia
I was just thinking, and I've decided that Saskia is one of the few names I really like that I'd probably use. I like Octavia, Carmen, Berengaria, etc, but they don't seem as solid and real as Saskia does. It really does seem pretty and fun, but without being princessy. The problem with names like Octavia are that they really are frilly and overly girly; names like Iris, Wilhelmina and Olive are increasingly either popular or hipsterish and trendy either way; I adore Carmen, but I don't think that I could make it work. And a lot of my other favourites which don't fall into those categories are just too whimsical and obscure and oddball to use as first names. Not that any of this matters, because it's not like I'm planning to have kids any time soon, but...Saskia really works for me. It's feminine but not too frilly, not common but not insanely oddball, sharp, spunky and fun. What do you think of Saskia? What would you think if you met a Saskia - a kid, an adult, a middle aged woman? Does it work?
Saskia or Carmen? Which one is better? What imagery do you get for both or either?
What combos work well for Saskia? What are your favourites?
If you prefer Carmen, what combos work well with Carmen? (I've yet to find one I really, really love more than anything else, but I hold out hope).

I think Carmen is great and I don't really like Saskia at all. It sounds so harsh and raspy to me. Like sandpaper. I kind of get the same impression from Saskia as like, Iris and Olive, maybe a little bit trendy but still pretty distinctive. Objectively Saskia is much less common than Iris or something but I've met a couple of Saskias and never known/heard of an Iris / Wilhelmina / Olive so that skews things. (By the way I really love Iris and I don't think it's too popular right now, just comfortably familiar. She'd probably still be the only Iris around)I think Saskia works fine. One I knew was my friend's mum from Berlin, the other was like a 15 year old English girl. Works for both of them although it still feels pretty German to me. I don't get much imagery for Saskia, it's green. Carmen is more orange, like sunset coloured, and really beautiful and strong.
Combos:
Saskia Iris
Saskia Brynja
Saskia Constanze
Saskia Rosamund
Saskia Margriet
Saskia Frederune
Saskia Antonie

I love this explanation: "Saskia really works for me. It's feminine but not too frilly, not common but not insanely oddball, sharp, spunky and fun." It's exactly how I feel about my girl's favourite Mattea. I don't mind Saskia. I've had to get over the "Sasquatch" part that I kept hearing at first. But it's a nice name.I think it could totally work on any age. Personally, I love Carmen, but the gender-neutrality of Carmen has always made me hesitate.I've like Carmen Alessandra for a while. Or Carmen Amelia. I want to like Carmen Avery but I just feel like it's too androgynous. :)

I never thought of the Sasquatch part! Ack.Carmen Alesssandra is quite pretty. As is Carmen Amelia, although I wonder if it's too much 'me' sound. Avery isn't my style, but it does look spunky with Carmen :3

I think that on a kid, where I live, it's just as trendy as Iris and Olive and Zara (which is to say, hip yuppies use them but not very frequently). On an adult, it doesn't quite seem cheap, but I do get a sort of tartish vibe, like Dasha or Alizee. It still seems foreign enough that I don't actually expect a real Saskia to be a pornstar or whatever - she could be anything. But the image I have of Saskia yicks me out enough that I'd never want to use it, and I find it a little annoying. TBBH. Honestly I never heard of this name until maybe 7 years ago or so, and I felt that way pretty much immediately, so maybe it is the SASS sound that gets me? Not sure.Carmen is a name I like a lot, and it's an opera ... it's the opera character, and I don't know how I know that because I'm not familiar with it but it's a flirty and gutsy romanticized name. I actually think it's more feminine than Saskia. It's less harsh sounding, IMO. So Carmen's better, but only by my personal standards. I guess they're about even when you count their histories and meanings.Carmen Araceli
Carmen Delphine / Delfina
Carmen Saskia (why not?)
Saskia Maja
Saskia Marguerite
Saskia Celandine

I totally love Carmen Delphine / Carmen Delfina. I prefer Delphine, but Delfina here is so lyrical and lilting.
Saskia Marguerite is also lovely.

One of my house mates is called Saskia! She's 20 years old but I think it works for all ages from children to old ladies. I prefer Saskia to Carmen.

I love Saskia, it's in my top 4. I've never met a Saskia, but I've spotted a few in newspapers and blogs, and definitely think it works. I like Carmen too, but obviously prefer Saskia. It makes me think of oranges and spices for some reason ... And of the song Saskia by Swedish/Dutch singer Cornelis Vreeswijk (http://youtu.be/PkxLx_KjxJQ). Saskia has a name that chimes ... (first line translated)Some combos I like are Saskia Ruth and Saskia Theodora.
