[Opinions] Tancred
I just rediscovered how much I love the name Tancred. Unfortunately no one would pronounce it right (TANG-kred) and more importantly my husband will never agree to it. Thoughts? Shine want to give it a new home?

I know a man who went by Tancred, which wasn't his real name (James), and it worked for him.

I feel I SHOULD like it, but it's too close to the Swedish word for toothpaste, tandkräm, which sounds like TANG-krem in spoken language. But since you don't live in Sweden, I guess Tancred could be a nice choice.

I see "Tan cred."Like "street cred," except "tan cred." Like street credentials for being so well-tanned, or something. It makes me think of "Jersey Shore," which is never good.

Having never seen the name before, I would have pronounced it TANG-kred as well, so I'd not sure what the complication would be there. It's interesting all right. I don't immediately dislike it, which means it's likely to grow on me. It feels a bit like Taggart to me, which I've had a soft spot for.

Ehhh, it's all puffy and inflamed and festering. I really WANT to like it, but for some reason it just brings to mind the word "rancid" and "rank" (as in smell) and the resulting image is not pretty.

It's a bit ridiculous. Sounds like it belongs on Game of Thrones instead of real life.

I think it's terrible.

so do I...Like I want to get all tancred up and fight with it.
Or I have a tancre sore so my gum is all tancred.

It doesn't do anything for me. It makes me think of the word tank and tankard and I don't really like the sound of it. I am confused how people might mis-pronounce it though?

Probably as "tankard". That's the first thing I thought of when I read it.

I think it's too...pompous to be used. And I for one am not terribly keen on names associated with the Crusades.

Obviously I need to brush up on my history... I had no idea it was seen this way.

If it doesn't come straight out of a Saki short story, it should have! Perfect for a slightly wicked, very elegant 1920s man about town.I'm puzzled about the pronunciation issue, though - how would people pronounce it? TANGkred seems pretty obvious to me.
