I never really cared for Stella. I always loved Estella and thought Stella was the vastly inferior, slightly tacky shorter version of it. It used to make me think of a stripper or a barmaid.

It has grown on me a little since I met a girl named Stella who is really cool. I think it works better than Estella because it's not so long and heavy even though I still think Estella is more beautiful.

What do you think of Stella?

Do you think Stella works as a nickname for Estella? Or would it be silly as Stella is a full name and can be used on its own? Estella nn Stella?

I like both Estella and Stella. They give me completely different vibes, though. Stella is more modern, Estella is more Victorian.

I think an Estella would inevitably be called Stella or Stell at least some of the time, but Stella is just fine on its own. Lots of people are doing that, now.

Stella is okay, it's one ella sounding name that I don't think sounds like a dog or a very old woman. I think Stella is better on its own, it seems kind of pointless to give another, extremely similar name if you just want to use the totally legitimate nn all the time anyway.
But I like Estelle better than either Estella or Stella.

I've always hated Stella. My mother drinks larger which is called stella artois, which is probably where this hatred stems from, and also adds to the imagery of a barmaid. I somewhat like Estella - but prefer Estelle in the hope to avoid Stella as a nickname - plus I find that Estelle sounds more refined and elegant. Estella nn Stella would work, it's no more silly as Matilda nn Tilda. :)

I don't really like either of them, but if I were in your shoes, I'd just go for it: use Estella and nickname her Stella. I don't think that's silly at all.

I like Stella a lot. To be honest, somehow the slight tawdriness of it makes it more appealing to me. It's feminine, but it's not one of those dainty little princess names. There's life and spunk to it. Anyway, I think it's too long to be a nickname for Estella.

I also know a preschool Stella! Lovely kid, named after her granny.

Estella always seems overdone to me; the E- adds nothing but frilliness. And I totally loathe Estelle, the original dowdy housewife name. Stella has elegant beauty and also energy; Estella seems to lack muscle tone.

I used to be indifferent to Stella - if I thought of it at all it was the name of the middle-aged woman who ran an eponymous local dress shop, or of Thelma Ritter's character in "Rear Window".
But I worked with a stunningly beautiful young Greek-Australian Stella and now I think her name is as beautiful as she is!
I like Estelle too.
