So, sometimes I think about this name. One of my great-grandfathers was named Horace, and he has a really romantic, tragic story, which is right up my alley. But the name Horace never really clicked with me. Horatio though, is frilly and snooty sounding enough to pique my interest, so every once in a while it sort of bubbles up to the surface of my mind.
The CSI character though... do you think it makes the name more useable, or just adds another layer of ridiculousness to it?
I don't know how I would combo it. Maybe Horatio William or Horatio Calvin? Those are also names that feature in grandpa Horace's sad tale.

Horatio is one of my absolute favorite names! Its swashbuckling pomposity is smolderingly irresistible. I like Horace, too, but Horatio is far superior.
I don't think the association with the CSI character is problematic; in fact, I think Horatio Hornblower is a more recognizable namesake.
I really like Horatio Calvin. Are you looking for a subdued middle name? How about...

Tell me the romantic tragic story!
I could perhaps get into Horace given time; it's not that bad, though I'd have to get over Slughorn. But I love Horatio. It is slightly OTT but who cares, it's such a big splendid flourish of a name, waving Hooray (tio) at you in a cheerful manner. There could be something to be said for a calmer middle name, perhaps; but I'd just choose the one with the best story.
I don't know the CSI dude so here are some of the more interesting Horatio combos from the 1840s birth records:

Horatio Folkestone (no idea if that's a family name or if they just had a nice holiday once in Folkestone)

Ok here is the tragic tale of Grandpa Horace
His youngest child, little William, became sick. This was olden times and they were poor country farmers so who knows what sort of ailment he had. William became weaker and weaker until he could barely walk. He would always ask his father to carry him, but Horace was a farmer who had farming to do and three other children to care for. Grandpa Horace loved him very much but they could not afford a doctor for William. So instead he built low railings all over the house so William could drag himself along the rails from room to room. But one day little William finally died. Horace was so distraught that he went mad. His family put him in an insane asylum in the Big City, where he committed suicide by throwing himself through a window.
AND THAT'S THE STORY

I'd never want to use the name Horace, but Horatio is actually my first choice if I ever have a son. There are so many cool namesakes to choose from (though the CSI Horatio is not one I think of in this regard...not very familiar with the series)!
I like both William and Calvin, but I don't think that I'd use either for a middle name in this case. William is possible because it's a family name, but Calvin, probably not. I honestly don't know what to use as a middle name for Horatio. John, maybe?

I dig Horatio. Horatio Calvin is cool. Re: CSI...I think, you know, I think it makes it maybe more accessible to people in general, but Horatio Caine himself, with his sunglasses and his punchlines and his memes - that does add a tinge of absurdity to the name's vibe for me.
I can't really get into Horace itself, either, but I like the nn Hod.

I also have a great-grandfather Horace, albeit one without a tragic, romantic backstory. It's not a name that clicks with many people. Due to its sheer ugliness, no doubt. If I wanted to honor Horace, I'd go with Horatio, too, or perhaps Orazio.
I don't watch CSI, so I can't address the impact of the character. My sole Horatio association is Horatio Hornblower. Kinda cool.

What an awesome name, right? I think it's cool to use it for Horace, since you didn't really know Horace and are just sort of mythologizing him. Like, Horatio is clearly related to Horace, but also eschews it without much fuss.
