Help[Opinions] List all the nicknames you can come up with
For Miriam and Malcolm. We're pretty sure that we're going with these and I want a head's up on what my Mom might come up with. I also got into an argument Ruth a friend that Miriam will be called Mary all the time.

The Malcolms I've known of have been Mal or Malky for short. Another one calls himself Calum. Miriam I guess Miri or Mimi? I don't know any who shorten their name. I'm not really getting the Mary thing but they sound different in my accent.

The first syllable of Miriam sounds like the first syllable of Mary in my accent.

I wouldn't have thought of Mary without reading your post... Miri and Mary are similar but not enough to be a nickname...

I only know one Miriam(she's about your age), and she's nearly always called simply Miriam, though I believe in-family, it's Mimi.(French-speaking mother, English-speaking father, both of them from India, emigrated to Canada, children born here.)
The Malcolms I grew up with were often called Malkie.

A lot of people listed Mira / Miri as nicknames. My niece is Mira - is Miriam too close?

How often will they see each other?
If the answer is 'not often', then no, they're not too similar. If the answer is 'often', well, yes, they ARE too similar. That's how I see it.

Then of course there's all the unforeseen nicknames that might appear, that don't necessarily have a thing to do with the name, or are a function of a child's mispronunciation. A friend of mine is Melinda Lee, and her family still calls her Winnie, because when she was little a kid she played with couldn't say Melinda Lee and called her Winnie Wee.
There's always stuff like Red, Too Short, Dolly Dimples, Little Man, that kind of thing. It still happens.

I'm 31 and thanks to my cousin calling me Haven Salad once when I am a kid I'm stuck with it. My brothers thought it was hilarious and still do. Once a nickname sticks, it sticks

Not always. My family used to call me Pookie, but they don't anymore.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. If you're worried your family might brand the kid with a nickname you don't like, you just have to take that chance, I guess. Sounds like they do what they feel like doing.

I'm not worried. I'm just curious to see what they might cone up with. I don't mind that I'm still called Salad, Fave and Toad. I find it hilarious, although I hated it when younger. Everyone in my family has dorky nicknames.
We're a thousand miles away, so it won't even stick. I'm bored and want to see what people come up with. And it will hopefully inoculate Alexander to the inevitable.

Anything can turn into a nickname. My stepfather has a friend named Robert, who even today at something like sixty years old, is called Buckwheat by everybody, family and friends alike. There's plenty of nicknames for Robert, but he's Buckwheat. It came about because when he was little the other kids would come to his house in the morning to play, and his grandmother would always say "As soon as he finishes his buckwheat, he can come out to play." And so he became Buckwheat.

So I completely understand nicknames. I just wanted an idea of what she might use. A
Mackey seems most likely, not sure about Miriam. Thankfully Mimi us out, my mom gives by Mimi instead of grandma.
