So I rediscovered the name Anais and realized how much I love it. I did some reading around and it would appear that the 'correct' pronunciation is "ahn-eye-ees" or "ahn-a-ees" but some people pronounce it "a-NAY-is". It also seems to depend on whether you prefer the French or Hebrew form of the name, and whether you live in America or elsewhere.
So I guess my question is: can Anais be pronounced either way or should we stick to one over the other?
Feel free to throw some good middle names out there for Anais, too. :)

My mum wears the perfume Anais Anais and pronounces it An-eye-ees which is how I tend to say it, but I have heard two different people pronounce the name An-ay. I don't know if it was a mistake or if that's a genuine pronunciation that is used. It's a nice-looking name but I think it would cause a lot of confusion!

It's hard to describe exactly how I pronounce it. Sort of like an-eye-ees. I think it is the type of name that will always be pronounced different due to people's accents.

I say a-NAY. I knew a girl called this once, and that's how she pronounced it. I always figured the S was silent. Kind of sounds weird saying it with an S.

Really? I guess it's just an issue of familiarity, but I think that a-NAY is really strange. I've never heard that pronunciation before. Especially weird when I think of the writer Anais Nin - a-NAY Nin.

The A-Nay prn seems to be popular in the UK. A lot of people seem to think that's the name of the perfume Anais Anais as well. Not sure why, maybe an advertising campaign that wasn't clear or used the wrong prn.

ah nah EES, like in Spanish. I'm from Wisconsin, USA, but the only people I've heard of with that name are Hispanic performers.

I'd tend too stick to an-a-ees myself. I'd need to know more about the Hebrew version (so I don't go around judging people because their Hebrew name isn't pronounced like in French lol)

I say it "ah-na-ees." But the ee is very short. So if I say it fast it sounds almost (not quite) like "ah nice" ... the last part is much like the word naive. It does not rhyme with five, but it does not take too many milliseconds longer to say naive than it does to say five.
Honestly, if I were introduced to someone named "a-NAY-iss" and found out she spelled it Anais, I'd probably smirk and say to myself that they must have found it on the internet. IMO that is just the wrong pronunciation, regardless of how common it might be. Maybe if I were introduced to the Hebrew form of the name that you mention, which I've never heard of, I might be less inclined to judge. ??
