Names can always be ruined by an association, no matter their previous popularity. Dick was definitely ruined by association and that was an extremely common nickname before the 60s. Same with Fannie and Fanny which were popular before the 20s.
Twilight was extremely common and I just feel that a whole generation is thinking 'sparkly vampire' when they hear Edward. Suddenly all its history doesn't seem to matter anymore. It doesn't help that it's not as common anymore. Jacob and Isabella are so common that the association isn't that strong but Esme, Rosalie and Edward are more strongly tied to the books. Edward is still used quite a bit, it places around #150 (too lazy to look it up) but not common enough that it would be free of those associations.
I've decided I just don't really care as people will not make the connection with Ned. And yeah, maybe it will fade. I hope so.
