[Opinions] Desiree
My fiance doesn't really think too much about names, or understand why/how I think so much about names, so today when he came home and said, "Norah! I heard a name I really liked today!" I was super excited. But then it was Desiree. Which to me sounds kind of trashy. And stripper-y. And then he thought it was spelled Dezeray. But yeah. Do you like Desiree? I kind of do like how it sounds, and I think Dez or Dezi is a cute nickname, but I'm not sure I can get past the white trash association I have with it.

I've never liked it. In high school, my best friend and I would talk about the names of our future children a lot. One of her top picks was Desiree and I tried to talk her out of it back then.

I don't like it. It does seem very white trash and stripper-y to me. The nn "Des/Dez" is ugly to me. I suppose the name has a pretty sound, but it's been ruined. I'm surprised your fiancé had never heard of the name before!

I don't think of it as trashy. I don't think of it as white trashy, either, but as someone said, that's because it's used more by blacks than whites. (I've known some white Desirees, though.)I think it is beautiful.

I have a friend named Desiree. She parties a lot, but she is a very warm, caring person. I can see her owning her own bar one day, being that old, slightly grizzled chick that everybody loves. Sorry if this didn't do much to change your opinion of the name, but I swear, this is a positive image. She's a very cool person.

I kind of like it but I wouldn't use it because a) my dad has a cousin named Desiree and b)it sounds kind of tacky.

I think it's got a very attractive sound to it. (Maybe your boyfriend encountered the name spelled Dezeray; i went to school with a Desirae.) It's a bit flashy, but in the same way that Dominique is flashy: sexy but with more than a touch of class.
I don't find it a white-trash name, mainly because it's pretty predominantly a black favorite.

My Desiree friend was thus named because she was the first child and her parents (both medical doctors fwiw) were really delighted about starting a family. Nothing trashy there! She goes by Des, mostly. But when she started preschool, the teacher wasn't familiar with the name at all, didn't check the paperwork, and persistently called the poor child Daisy-Ray. If you want a trashy disaster of a name, look no further! But, possibly because of happy memories of giggling at the story, I do like Daisy, very much, and would happily use it.

No. It makes me think of diarrhea (I don't know why).

I may be in the minority, but I don't have that association with the name. The only association I have with the name Desiree is the character from Kate Chopin's short story "Desiree's Baby," which gives it a tragic quality more than anything in my mind. That being said, I do think it sounds pretty - and I consider it much more classy than, say, Brandy or Destiny.

I, too, think about "Desiree's Baby" when I hear the name. I still really like it, though, and think Desi / Dezi is a cute nickname.

I don't like it and also think trashy stripper-y. It's so sexual for anyone.
