Worst day ever. I texted my c-word friend that I couldn't find it and she came over and got it out from under the stove and took it back, because I'm clearly too irresponsible to own a cat because I didn't close the door to the room I put her in.

I'm sorry, Sibyl/Emma (not sure what you go by now :) . Hopefully you're able to get a kitty of your own, soon. Have you thought about adopting from a shelter, perhaps?

Gee, your friend is kind of a jerk.
Obviously didn't want to give up the cat in the first place. Lame.

She's just really self-righteous and motherly. It's actually pretty normal for the cat to be under the damn stove for the first day, I didn't expect her to come over and take it back. And as she was leaving she got all sigh-y over the fact that I was upset. Like, yeah, it's a little embarrassing.

My husband's old cat hid behind his fridge for a whole week when she moved in. She must know you felt insulted, but she ought to have to respond to it too. I hope you told her.Well, at least you had not given it a name yet. That would have made it worse.
Poor kitty.

Yeah. I hope she posts about this on reddit and gets schooled in how totally normal it is for cats to hide. She definitely knew I felt insulted - I was in no state to go on about it, but she got her digs in where she could. Really odd. I don't want to see her anymore. They were calling it "Luna." They can call it Luna all f*cking day.

Brought kitten home. She's so quiet and little and wise. She's also hiding - completely vanished! I'm not much closer to naming her. I'll wait until she settles in a bit and says hello.

The kittens are adorable!
I think most names on your list sound good.

Thanks! My friend posted another pic. In this one, kitty looks like total nutcase.

Hah. Fun names! Joan is indeed very gray. I like a lot of them but my very favorite is Musidora - this name makes my heart dance! I always forget about it.

I always loved Bartholomew, Beauregard, and Gypsy for cat names.

Those are very nice.

Name it Smoky. Or Little Smoky. Or Smoky Jo/Joe.
vote up1
I will not.

KITTY YESSSS.
I like Griselda a lot. I see Griselda as a serene and intelligent sort of moggy though, and not a bouncy cat or a grumpy cat or an insane wall-climbing nutcase cat, so, as mirfak said, wait till you've had her for a day or two. Glaucus is also excellent.

Either Earl Grey or Leporello, I love Leporello...

The girl who's probably going to adopt it after me is all for Earl on a girl. I'm not so sure...

You could have Zerlina or Elvira, otherwise :)

If it's the gray one in the photo, it's female. She looks like our cat Indy. Cool gray with creamier patches. It's a less-pigmented version of the tortoiseshell/calico pattern, orange and black, like the one on the left... cats have to be females to have both orange/cream and black/gray at the same time because the orange gene is on the X chromosome. (Well, unless they're XXY. Rare.)Mirfak doesn't really roll off the tongue...I'd wait to name her after meeting her. She might be shy, sly, irritable, hyper, funny, cozy ... you never know.Shakti
Vitamin (pron. the British way, vih- rather than vie-)
Liadan
Ceniza (sen-EE-sa; ash in Spanish)
Bacchus
Verdandi
Chuchundra (from Rikki Tikki Tavi - a nervous and fearful creature)
Winalot (sry that is a little sick. I'm a cat lover, I just think it's funny and would be a charm name to keep her safe.)
Frangipani

Very cool. Yes, she is a girl - good call. Thanks for the very nice suggestions. How is mirfak pronounced, anyway? I'm saying it like murphy, but mur-phak. sounds awful! but meer-fak really doesn't roll off the tongue at all.

Philandra...?I "say" it like the first syllable of mirror ... mur if fast, meer if slow.
It's probably really meer-fahk. ?
